Amateur Boxing Showcase in Torrington
The coaches and directors of Northwest Amateur Boxing, Inc. sponsor a benefit amateur boxing show on Saturday, October 27 at the Torrington High School Gym. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. show, dubbed the "Connecticut Showcase"—the first to be held in Torrington in 25 years.
Boxers from active boxing clubs from all around the state will be matched up at many levels of weight class, age and experience, with some exciting matches promised to develop. This event is a United States Boxing sanctioned event, and U.S.A. Boxing officials will be in charge of the officiating.
Amateur boxers from as young as 8 years of age to their 20s are expected to compete, including some boxers holding various state, regional and national titles and rankings. Coaches and trainers from around the state as well as western Massachusetts have indicated that their clubs will be at the event. There are approximately 30 active clubs throughout Connecticut under U.S.A. Boxing jurisdiction, which controls all aspects of safety procedures, rules, equipment and officiating.
This event is being presented as a family event, and families with young athletes or potential young athletes—both boys and girls—are urged to attend. This show is serving as an introduction to amateur Olympic Style boxing, as well as a fundraiser to assist Northwest Amateur Boxing in starting their program in the downtown Torrington area. Several club sites are being considered, but no decision has been made; the group hopes to make an announcement sometime around the date of the show.
Torrington High School, located on Major Beese Drive, has been recently renovated and sparkles. It will be a super site for the event. There will be food served, including burgers, hot dogs, fries, snacks and beverages. There will be red and white direction signs placed at key intersections to direct patrons to the high school gym.
Tickets will be available at the door, and at Anzelloti's Sporting Goods, Sports Palace, Inc., and Tommy's Bicycle and Fitness in Torrington; Tony's Drive-In Package Store, and True Value in Harwinton; and Litchfield Athletic Club, Sportsmen's of Litchfield, and True Value in Litchfield. Tickets are $10 adults, $5 students (any age), kids (under 5) free; for more info call 860-567-8902.
