Artwell Gallery, 19 Water St. in Torrington celebrates EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS with Sirius Coyote on Saturday, October 27 at 8 p.m. Mexico’s Day of the Dead is a time to honor the ancestors and dearly departed. Cemeteries are cleaned and adorned with flowers, candles, incense and special foods, and home altars are created to provide the spirists with the pleasures they once knew in life. Sirius Coyote will play selections of contemporary and primitive music on a wide array of instruments they have crafted themselves. New Arts Gallery, 513 Maple Street in Litchfield presents an exhibit of the work of JOHN GREENE AND ALEXANDER SHUNDI through November 5. John Greene's work, primarily wax and paint, is about the process of making art. His images are more imagined that actual. Portals, exits and entrances inspire him. He uses materials that age, rust and change and are for him the elements of birth and survival. Alexander Shundi's paintings can be called narrative, personal, and from a perspective of looking down on the world as an outside observer or even standing above it. The psychological and personal element seems always to dominate in his process of creating paintings. The landscape of Italy, his native country, appears often in his work, along with images full of historic reference. Simon's Rock College in Great Barrington presents TUCUMAN: THE CHILDREN TWENTY YEARS LATER, an exhibition by Julio Pantoja in the Doreen Young Gallery through November 15. The exhibit, which also features a selection of arpillera tapestries, made by the mothers of the disappeared, documents the children of the victims of repression in Tucuman, Argentina. Pantoja's goal was to photograph the children over seven years, the same period of time that the military dictatorship lasted. These photographs are meant to document the existence of the disappeared and tell their terrible story. Northwestern CT Community College, Park Place East in Winsted presents "LOOP DREAMS" on Friday, October 26 at 7 p.m. in Founders Hall Auditorium as part of the Visual Communication Creativity Series’ Independent Film and Video Forum. This documentary about the making of a low-budget movie was produced by Captured Time Productions in Litchfield. We learn how and why the Prince was changed into a Beast in the first place. We also see the beast's growth under Beauty's subtle guidance, from a raging creature to a man who can be loved for himself. Washington Art Association is looking for artists and craftspersons to submit work for its annual CHRISTMAS SALE to be held on November 23 through December 24. A wide selection of art and crafts will be considered, including pottery, fine and graphic arts, jewelry, metalwork, small sculpture, knitting and weaving, woodwork, fused and blown glass, etc. Work should be ready to hang (maximum size 45" x 45"); limit is two pieces per artist.
