Classes and Workshops
Harwinton Recreation offers ADULT FITNESS classes (for ages 18 and over) at Harwinton Community Hall on Mondays and Thursdays from 6-7 p.m. through May. Certified aerobics instructor Charlene Razowski will lead a total body workout including warm-up, step routines, pulse monitoring, toning and cool-down. Berkshire Botanical Garden, Routes 102 & 183 in Stockbridge offers PLANT HEALTH CARE on Mondays, November 5 through November 26 from 6-9 p.m. The course will cover primary factors that comprise plant health care including insects, disease pathogens, and abiotic influences. Participants will learn to minimize potential problems through proper site preparation, plant selection and placement. Also included will be diagnostic and pest management techniques, and information on IPM (Integraed Pest Management). Berkshire Botanical Garden, Routes 102 & 183 in Stockbridge offers PRUNING WOODY PLANTS on Wednesdays, November 7 and November 14 from 6-9 p.m.; and Saturday, November 17 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. This course focuses on techniques specific to pruning woody shrubs and trees. During two lectures and one full-day hands-on pruning workshop, students will learn to prune, shape and rejuvenate trees and srubs. Consider how to assess hazard trees, when to call an arborist, and how to select one. Northwestern CT Community College, Park Place in Winsted sponsors THE MEDIEVAL TRAVELER: A VOYAGE BACK IN TIME with Barbara Neubauer on Wednesdays, November 7 through November 21 from 7-8 p.m. Join pilgrims, merchants, friars and adventurers on an illuminating tour of the Middle Ages. Share in the medieval traveler's experiences and reactions as they explore the boundaries of their known world. Slides and literary sources will enhance the presentation of the medieval traveler. Northwestern CT Community College, Park Place East in Winsted offers a class in HERBAL SOAPMAKING with Roxann Lowell on Monday, November 12 from 7-9 p.m. The class will make a basic herbal soap recipe, learn about simple equipment necessary to make soap, some troubleshooting tips, a few historical tidbits, and some packaging ideas. Simsbury Public Library, 725 Hopmeadow St. (Rout 10) in Simsbury presents THE IRS AND YOUR SMALL BUSINESS on Tuesday, November 13 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the library’s Program Room. Joseph S. McCarthy, a tax specialist with the Internal Revenue Service, will provide an overview of tax issues relating to small businesses. Participants will learn about the types of business organizations, common tax forms and filing requirements, record-keeping issues and common business deductions. Berkshire Botanical Garden, Routes 102 & 183 in Stockbridge offers a workshop on WOODLAND TERRARIUMS with Elisabeth Cary on Wednesday, November 14 from 1-3 p.m. This is a hands-on workshop about the craft of constructing a terrarium using native woodland plants, including a variety of mosses, ferns and evergreen ground covers. Canton Parks and Recreation offers WOMEN’S FITNESS classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, November 27 through January 29 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Canton Community Center. (There will be no classes from December 25 through January 1.) The class will include warm-up exercises, low- to medium-impact aerobics, floor exercises, and cool-down.
