Republican Team Will Not Disappoint You
By Anne Ruwet, Torrington

This is my first time ever running as a candidate in any political office, although politics is not new to me. My parents aspired to teach all seven of their children that it is critical to be involved in the community and to contribute their skills or gifts to that process.

The Republican City Council candidates in this election decided early that we would campaign as a team and support Tom Jerram as Mayor. I share this with the voters of Torrington because it is important that they know that this Republican team can and will work together to best meet the challenges and opportunities that Torrington has ahead of it in the next two years. The City of Torrington must realize that life is not the same for any of us since the September 11th tragedy and that we must look at all the issues that impact the city differently.

The downtown revitalization plans may have been attractive at the initial stages to some, but the process must be inclusive of more people and groups—in particular the Historical Society, which plays an important role in protecting our past. At the same time, businesses are leaving downtown Torrington because they are unable to attract people.

The arts are having a great success in the downtown area. The Warner Theatre is attracting people from all over state to attend their performances, and the Nutmeg Ballet has flourished in its enrollment of students. Let’s build on that and provide the support needed to attract more business to downtown.

The other important issue is the education of our children. This includes developing a partnership with the Board of Education that will allow us to be a part of the process. It has been in the Board of Education’s plans to address the needs of Torringford School; we must not ignore the growing problems at the school any longer. Students are important to our future, and they need an environment of learning that will enhance their learning. If you have not been to Torringford School in a long time, go visit and see for yourself the leaking ceilings and the serious physical condition of the school. I am confident that we must put this ahead of any other priorities.

I want to thank in advance of November 6th election the family and friends who have given their support to me. I encourage all Voice readers to vote for the Republican team on November 6, and we will not disappoint you. Thank you.
