Building Skills While Invigorating Community

During the week of October 8, a team of two Missoula Children’s Theatre actors came to Winsted to mount the classic children’s story, Treasure Island. Sponsored by the Shafeek Nader Trust for the Community Interest, the residency helped 45 Winsted young people develop life skills as they participated in a four-day rehearsal process and a performance that was attended by approximately 250 Winsted residents on Friday evening, October 12 at the Hinsdale Elementary School. The young people were students at local public, private, parochial, and home schools.

Since a picture can convey the meaning of an experience far better than words, the accompanying photos evince the skills that the young thespians developed during the week.

A video presentation of the performance will be aried on Friday, November 16 at 8 p.m. on Charter Cable channel 13.

By the first evening, the students were developing their ability to concentrate and to listen.

To make a comic bit work, the "pirates" had to concentrate and cooperate with each other and with Scott McGee, who directed them and played Long John Silver.

By the third day of rehearsals, the Missoula team had helped students learn to work together, focus on a common goal, and still express their own individual creativity. In this photo, the patriots are considering whether or not they will let their children go to sea to find treasure. Each student is focused on the problem while still finding their own way to express their thoughts.

Cooperation continued as the young people dressed in the costumes that the Missoula team had brought with them.

The students have increased their concentration, creativity, and cooperation. Dressed and ready, a pirate and the ruffians have confidence that their week of hard work will pay off. They have become a team: a team that will share their story with the larger community.
