Torrington Legion to Honor Families of Military
Following the Attack on America, Legionnaires in Torrington are reactivating a program that served America during the tumultuous years of World War I and World War II. Members of American Legion Post 38 are offering Blue Star Service Banners to all immediate families of active duty military members, and for the families of National Guard and reservists called to active duty in support of Operations Noble Eagle and Enduring Freedom.
The Blue Star Service Banner, created in 1917, is designed to hang in home windows to show that a family member is serving in the armed forces. "The Blue Star Service Banner was like a candle in the window for the more than 20 million men and women who served in uniform during those two great wars," said Post Commander Leonard F. Dube. "This war on terrorism promises to be full of challenges and may take years to win. The banners remain an appropriate symbol of our nation's support for our armed forces."
The American Legion Post will display a Blue Star Service Banner during the Veterans Day ceremony at Coe Park on Sunday, November 11. After that, as more military reservists are mobilized, the Post will offer the banners for a donation of $12. To purchase a banner, families can contact the Veterans Service Office at 860-489-2531, or visit them at Coe Park. To order by mail, send to: VSO, 140 Main St., Torrington, CT 06790-5245.
Providing support to military families is an idea that has been around since the American Legion's founding in 1919. Legion Posts, American Legion Auxiliary Units and Sons of the American Legion Squadrons across America are prepared to assist military service members and their families as needed. Families needing assistance through the Family Support Network can call (toll-free) 800-504-4098.
