Students Are the Ones Who Suffer
By Jim Zilvitis, Winsted

This is in response to Michael Domack [He Doesn’t Get It, November 16].

Mr. Domack, you don’t get it. While I am not a Torrington resident, I feel you are rudely attacking Mr. Valenti. Education is the most important resource we have in this country; without it the entire system will break down. As a college student I am accustomed to cutbacks, and "I am sick of it," to use your own words [Dissatisfied Teachers Should Get Real Jobs, October 12] against you.

Education is the key to life itself. Without it one cannot make use of their own abilities to succeed in life. When you mention people who suffer from not having a tax cut, you are advocating taking money away from where it belongs. In taking money away from our schools and students, the students are the ones who suffer. Mr. Valenti is right—teachers are grossly underpaid.

When you say you are sick and tired of education, try putting yourself in the classroom with those students who will suffer from a lack of teachers and learning resources. Education is the backbone of society itself. We are sick and tired of hearing you moan and groan over something you have no right to moan and groan about. So the next time you attack Mr. Valenti, think of the unfortunate students who will suffer so you can have a few more pennies in your pocket from your tax break.
