TORRINGTON: Friends of Hospice hold their 5th annual Tree Lighting at 6:30 p.m. at Brooker Memorial, 157 Litchfield St. You are invited to purchase a star for $15 to memorialize a loved one, and to join in hanging the stars on a Tree of Life planted on the Brooker lawn. WINSTED: Northwestern CT Community College offers a workshop entitled "Building Family Togetherness Over the Holidays" with Peggy Sudol from 1:45-3:05 p.m. in the North Building, Room 4. RIVERTON: Riverton Grange meets at the Grange Hall on Route 20 at 7:30 p.m. Presentations will be given on Belize, as well as on the Rebillard Farm. Sharon, George and Steven Russell are in charge of refreshnments, which will be served at the close of the meeting.

Saturday, December 8

HARWINTON: Harwinton Senior Center hosts a Senior Luncheon sponsored by Cub Scouts, Den 9 from noon-2 p.m. Come and enjoy a nice lunch, dessert and entertainment by the Scouts. Free to senior citizens; for reservations call Lisa at 485-0152.

NEW HARTFORD: Several members of New Hartford’s Open Space Committee will speak on open space preservation on Charter Community Vision Channel 13 at 8 p.m. Panel members will discuss the importance of preserving open space, developments at the state level and specifically in New Hartford to preserve open space, and the economic and quality of life benefits of open space preservation. GOSHEN: The Library Board, Friends, and staff of the Goshen Public Library invite the public to an open house from 7-8 p.m. in honor of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the library. Although the library was founded in December 1901, the library did not open to the public until May 27, 1902. Therefore, a series of events is also planned for next May. LITCHFIELD: Lourdes in Litchfield, Route 118 (east of the Litchfield Green) offers Candlelight Christmas Caroling outdoors at the Grotto at 7 p.m. The Grotto will be lit with candles as we gather around the manger to hear the story of Jesus’ birth and to sing songs in thanks for the coming of Christ among us. LITCHFIELD: Lourdes in Litchfield, Route 118 (east of the Litchfield Green) presents its Living Nativity outdoors at the Grotto from 3-5 p.m. Young people from the area will enact the Christmas story with the help of sheep, llamas, donkeys, and a choir of angels. As the animals surround their newborn King, the real meaning and mystery of the Christmas season will be told in story and song. Hot chocolate served in Pilgrim Hall will provide warmth.
