Number the Stars at Hartford Children’s Theatre

Lois Lowry, the author of Number the Stars, is coming to Hartford. Ms. Lowry’s book is a national bestseller, winner of the Newberry Award and Association Library Book of the Year Award. She will answer questions and sign copies of her book following January 11-12 performances of Number The Stars by Dr. Douglas W. and Susan Larche at Hartford Children’s Theatre.

Number the Stars is based on the events that transpired during World War II, in 1943, when Denmark was under Nazi occupation. The story revolves around one Danish girl, Anne Marie and her best friend, Ellen, who is Jewish. The Nazis have ordered relocation of the Danish Jews, and the production illustrates the events and actions taken by the Danish Resistance to protect the Jews from relocation by stowing them in the bow of the local fishermen’s boats and secretly transporting them across the sea to "free" Sweden. The play is a celebration of humanity, and the risks the people of Denmark took to protect their own people during a time of disaster and oppression. Hartford Children’s Theatre has chosen to stage this production on the basis of its relevant social and educational impact in respect to the Jewish culture.

Number the Stars will be performed at the Avery Theatre in the Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford on Fridays, January 11 and January 18 at 7:30 p.m.; and on Wednesdays and Thursdays, January 12-13 and January 19-20 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 adults, $10 students (ages 6-17), $6 children (ages 5 and under), $8 seniors
