Music and Dance

University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Ave. in West Hartford presents STEVE NYSTRUP AND KATE McDONNELL on Friday, December 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wilde Auditorium. Nystrup is best known for his musical scoring of "Amistad Connecticut" for Connecticut Public Television. A wide ranging guitar wizard, lyricist and a singer, Nysrup's songs reflect a wise and thoughtful poetic voice. Kate McDonnell is one of the premier female solo acoustic acts around. Performing in the duo McDonnell-Tane, she has opened for Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Judy Collins, Leo Kotke and Arlo Guthrie. This is a benefit concert for the Center City Churches. Valley Community Baptist Church, West Avon Rd. in Avon hosts the FARMINGTON VALLEY CHORALE in concert on Friday, December 14 at 8 p.m. The Chorale will perform under the direction of Donald Smith of Burlington with professional soloists and orchestra. Featured works will be Mozart’s "Vesperade de Dominica" and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ "Fantasia on Christmas Carols." Soloists are Joanne Scattergood, Gretchen Collins, Floyd Higgins and Howard Sprout. Milton Hall in Litchfield hosts LUI COLLINS in concert on Friday, December 14 at 8 p.m. Ms. Collins established herself as a powerful presence in the folk community in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s with the release of her early Philo and Green Linnet recordings. Collins blends her original songs, accompanied by guitar and clawhammer banjo, with dynamic readings of her poetry in an intimate conversation with her audience. Connecticut Dance Theatre, 523 Main St. in Watertown presents CLARA AND THE NUTCRACKER on Friday, December 14 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, December 15 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, December 16 at 2 p.m. at the Taft School in Watertown. The production incorporates both professional and student dancers to bring the beloved characters magically to life. A unique feature of Donna Bonasera's production is that it is fully narrated, so even the youngest members of the audience may fully understand the story. St. John’s Chorale presents Francis Poulenc’s "Gloria" and other music of the holiday season during its annual CHRISTMAS CANDLELIGHT CONCERT on Friday, December 14 at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, December 16 at 4 p.m. at St. John’s Church in Washington. The Chorale will welcome back organist Thomas Brown as accompanist on the 34-rank Wicks organ that was installed at St. John’s in 1999. "Gloria," written by Poulenc in 1959 for chorus and soprano, will also feature Ann Martindale of Warren as soloist. The Chorale is a 20-member auditioned group with members from the towns of Washington, Warren, Roxbury, Goshen, New Milford and Woodbury. Hartford Symphony Orchestra presents HARTFORD HOLIDAY POPS on Saturday, December 15 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, December 16 at 3 p.m. in the Mortensen Hall at the Bushnell Center for Performing Arts, 166 Capitol Ave. in Hartford. Guest conductor Peter John Sacco will lead this annual performance, which will include such pieces as Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride," selections from Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker" and Handel's "Messiah," a yuletide sing-along of carols, and plenty of other traditional Christmas songs. Drama and Comedy

Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts presents "THE HARRIET BEECHER STOWE PROJECT" on Thursday through Saturday, December 13-15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre on the Learning Corridor campus, 359 Washington St. in Hartford. These staged readings of a new musical based on the life of Harriet Beecher Stowe are the culmination of a three-month workshop held at the Academy. Harriet Beecher Stowe was best known for her novel, "Uncle Tom's Cabin." She became a celebrity, speaking out against slavery in the United States and Europe. Seven Angels Theatre, Plank Rd. in Waterbury presents "NUNSENSE A-MEN!" on Thursday through Saturday, December 13-15 at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, December 16 at 2 p.m. There will be a special benefit performance Saturday with Semina De Laurentis, the original Sister Mary Amnesia and artistic director of Seven Angels Theatre, stepping back into her original role for one performance only. This production puts a new wrinkle in old habits with an all-male cast. Watch the five Little Sisters of Hoboken as they prepare to put on a fundraising show because their order's chef, Sister Julia Child of God, prepared a botched batch of vichyssoise soup that sent fifty sisters to their demise. Hartford Stage, 50 Church St. in Hartford presents Eve Ensler's "NECESSARY TARGETS" through December 23. This is a story of two Americans who go to war-torn Bosnia to assist refugee women in confronting the devastation of their homeland and their shattered lives. TheaterWorks, 233 Pearl St. in Hartford presents "THREE DAYS OF RAIN" through December 23, with performances on Tuesday through Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The first act takes place in 1995; a world famous architect has recently died, and his two children, along with the son of his long-dead partner, reunite before the reading of the will and the discovery of a lost diary with its cryptic first entry: "three days of rain." In a surprising turn, act two transports the audience back in time to 1960, where the mysteries of the diary are revealed by the parents of the characters in act one. Kent Memorial Library, 32 North Main St. in Kent hosts a book signing by local illustrator LEE ELLEN SOHL on Saturday, December 15 at 11 a.m. View illustrations of Ms. Sohl from her work "More Dolphin Magic–The Adventure Continues," written by Anne Zinsser. Ms. Sohl is the Title I Reading teacher at Kent Center School, and enjoys drawing in her spare time. Sohl has painted scenery, sketched animal and house portraits, and designed logos and t-shirts. Oliver Wolcott Library, 160 South St. in Litchfield presents PENCILS AND PAINT–PAST AND PRESENT by artist Frances Peirce Clem through December 27. Clem's love of children is reflected in the subjects for her recent works, which include pencil portraits and primitive oil paintings of local children in period costume. She often finds inspiration for her own work in the creativity of her students. In honor of them, this exhibit displays her work at a child-friendly height, but children are welcome to bring their parents to the show. Ms. Clem serves as Northwestern Connecticut's representative for the Global Art Project, an international art exchange for peace. Canton Public Library, 40 Dyer Ave. in Canton presents a special ARTS AND CRAFTS exhibit and sale for the month of December. There will be approximately 20 artists who will exhibit a wide variety of fine crafts and two-dimensional art in both the display case and on the walls of the library. Some of the invited artists are Adriance Degroff, Richard Ivany, Kathleen Amrein, Betsy Gardiner, Katherine Pearson, Kathi Packer, Jen Knaus, Sue Bradley, Chris London, Jon Squier, Mary Fletcher, Betsy Tanzer and Ron Todd. A Frame Come True, 954 East Main St. in Torrington presents an exhibit and sale of the book "MEMORIES OF A MONARCH" by J. Elaine Senack through January 3; prints and notecards of paintings from the book will also be available. Although most of the local monarch butterflies have migrated from the area without a trace, one monarch chose to leave behind a story about his life. "Memories of a Monarch" is a newly published book about the life journey of a monarch butterfly, told from the monarch’s own perspective. Author and illustrator J. Elaine Senack has raised and released dozens of monarch butterflies. Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington features the work of SUSAN JORDAN through January 6. Her watercolors of local villages in fall and winter, trees, barns, houses and flowers will be on display. Mrs. Jordan works in a traditional, realistic style with fresh, transparent color and a strong interest in the interplay of light and shadow. A signature member of the National Watercolor Society, Mrs. Jordan and her husband Rocky, a photographer, moved to Litchfield in 1998. For more info call 860-567-4525.

The Warner Theatre, 68 Main St. in Torrington presents a special exhibit of ORBS in its atrium through January 12. Artists from Artwell used 12-inch acrylic globes as the basis for construction of these pieces, which will be auctioned off at the end of the exhibit. Litchfield Community Center, 421 Bantam Rd. in Litchfield offers GO WITH THE FLOW, a watercolor painting course with Dora Cox on Wednesdays, January 9-March 6 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Art is not a competition; it is an expression. These sessions will show you how to express yourself and have fun doing it. It does not matter if you’ve never held a brush or if you are an experienced painter, you will be learning something new and enjoying it. Dora is an accomplished artist and teacher who has studied with a number of prominent Canadian and American painters. Housatonic Audubon Society holds its 41st annual TRIXI STRAUSS CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT on Sunday, December 16 from 12:01 a.m.-midnight. The group’s count area is a 15-mile circle with its center at Hotchkiss School in Lakeville. Litchfield Hills Audubon Society will conduct its annual CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT on Sunday, December 16. Last year the Chapter tallied 83 species and over 16,000 individuals. Winsted Recreation Department sponsors SANTA IN THE PARK on Saturday, December 15 from 5-7 p.m. at the Recreation Playground Building on Rowley St. in Winsted. Children will have the opportunity to chat with Santa and receive a gift. There will be music and caroling, and after visiting with Santa, everyone is invited to enjoy the refreshments provided by the Winsted Elks. The Winsted Alternate High School will help with the decorating, and Santa’s helpers (the elves) will be on hand to assist Santa. There will also be sleigh rides provided by Wood Acre Farms, and a train display provided by Torrington Area Model Railroaders. The Winsted Police Department will be collecting toys for local children in need, and there will be a mitten tree (please bring mittens or gloves) in conjunction with Social Services for local children. Sheffield Historical Society, 159-161 Main St. (Route 7) in Sheffield sponsors its annual HOLIDAY STROLL on Saturday, December 15 from 2-4 p.m. The program begins at the Dan Raymond House on Main St.; after viewing this 1774 home, participants will visit four other historic houses decorated for the season. One of the homes belonged to a Sheffield family from 1858 to 1997; this family was instrumental in helping the new owners with their recent restoration, which will be seen by this year's holiday strollers. Another one of the homes to be visited is located on property that was once a model 19th century farm; in 1881, members of the Berkshire Farmer's Association met here to consider Sheffield's most important industry. Christ Church will be the gathering place at the end of the journey, where holiday music and refreshments will be available. Unionville Museum, 15 School St. in Unionville hosts its HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE on Sunday, December 16 from 2-4 p.m. The museum's current exhibit, "The Spirit of Giving," and Christmas trees that were decorated by local service groups will be featured. Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe Houses, 351 Farmington Ave. in Hartford present A NOOK FARM HOLIDAY on Sunday, December 16 from 4-7 p.m. Hartford's neighboring National Historic Landmarks celebrate holiday traditions during a special evening of cheer. Step back to Victorian Connecticut as actors portraying Twain, Stowe, their families and servants welcome visitors for tours of the festively-decorated first floors of both authors' historic homes. Enjoy carriage rides and entertainment under the stars, then warm up with complimentary refreshments. Make an ornament for your own Christmas tree, and a Victorian card as a keepsake of the memorable evening. The Mark Twain House will be collecting non-perishable food items for FoodShare of Greater Hartford; the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center will be collecting voluntary cash donations for the United Way. Kent Memorial Library, 32 North Main St. in Kent hosts an exhibition of 19TH CENTURY HOLIDAY DECORATIONS from December 15 through January 5. Included will be a Victoria and Albert Christmas tree on loan from the Holley-Williams House Museum in Lakeville, and an extensive exhibit of antique toys and memorabilia from the period. The collection includes items on loan from local residents and the Kent Historical Society.
