United We Stand
By Ashley Means, East Hartland
The East Hartland Post Office recently conducted a contest in coordination with the release of the "United We Stand" stamp. Entrants were encouraged to write a poem or essay expressing their patriotic spirit. Seventh grader Ashley Means, age 12, was the winner. Her poem is reprinted here at the request of the Postmaster of East Hartland, Debbie Washington.
Something happened, something's wrong,
But America the beautiful will stand proud and strong.
Although we're hurt and our hearts are sad,
Our spirits are alive and now we're mad.
But now's the time to show we're strong
And tell the world that hate is wrong.
Our troops are ready, they're all in place.
They've promised to protect us from what we face.
As you can see, there is no doubt
That freedom and unity are what America is all about.
