Me — Update
By Florence V. Thomen, East Canaan
What, no holiday article from me? I'll tell you why. I slipped and fell on a downward slope on wet grass on December 1. There were x-rays, hospital, the works—then home to make the best of it. I have a broken shoulder and very sore ribs, all of which are doing well because of the prayers of numerous churches and individuals. What a wonderful God! I know He did not cause this to happen to me, but He let it happen probably for some kind of lesson for me. Was I being smug about my wonderful good health up to this point, maybe? I thought only that my health was a great blessing, but maybe I have sounded as if I were bragging?
Now I am typing with one left finger on the typewriter. It is really awkward, as you can imagine.
So, what did Christmas and the New Year hold for me? I'll tell you. I typed a short paragraph about my disaster and sent copies to friends with greetings of the season. My shopping had been mostly finished, luckily. But I could not wrap things, so gifts had to be handed out openly! My usual holiday meal with my special guest will be after the holiday—no problem there.
I have found out who my true friends really are—look at all the cards I have strung up on a long loop. Only one is missing—why haven't you remembered me this year? I still need your love.
It is amazing what one can do if there is no one around to assist. I can even use my electric can opener with the help of my right hand that protrudes from my sling! I can even write my name, after a fashion, when needed. I don't wish anyone to be in my condition, but if you ever are, you might surprise yourself at how well you can manage, with God's help, when needed.
Anyway, thanks for listening and God bless all of you in the New Year. Keep well and happy, and soon I'll be my usual jolly self again with more articles. (I have a stack of them ready to submit as soon as I am given the word by our fine editor, Gary!) I love you all!
