Boxing Club Has New Home in Torrington
The Northwest Amateur Boxing Club is proud to announce (finally) that it now has a training facility, located at 45 Water St. in Torrington. This comes after a long search for a downtown site suitable for a program involving training both boys and girls in the sport of amateur boxing and physical fitness.
The facility, which opens on Monday, February 18, is equipped with six heavy bags, three speed bags, two double-end bags, two upper-cut bags and, of course, a 14 x 14 foot custom boxing ring. (The ring was obtained thanks to the support of Torrington Area Foundation for Public Giving.) Additionally, there are sets of training gear and protective equipment available for use by participants.
The youth program (under 18 years old) includes free instruction and free use of the facility equipment, but does require $32 per year membership in the United States Amateur Boxing Association, plus about $6 in personal equipment (hand wraps and mouth guard). Parents and youngsters interested in joining or finding out more about the program are invited to stop by the gym at 5 p.m. weekdays.
The club will operate weekdays from 5-8 p.m. and is open to any boy or girl from Litchfield County. All coaches and trainers are U.S.A. Boxing certified and are volunteers. There is a need for additional help in running this program, and anyone interested is asked to stop by any weekday from 5-8 p.m., or call Coach George Sigiel at 860-567-8902.
There also is a program for those over 18; those interested are asked to call 860-567-8902, or stop by the training facility weeknights from 5-8 p.m. for more info.
