Building a Career as an Artist

The Farmington Valley Arts Center in Avon nurtures artists through a variety of professional development programs. This spring, several workshop offerings will provide aspiring artists with practical guidance on creating a plan for success and achieving career goals and objectives.

On Friday, February 22 from 9:30 a.m.-noon, the first workshop, "Assessing Your Commitment," will guide participants through the process of identifying unique and personal strengths and using them to define one’s creativity and purpose in the daily process of decisionmaking.

On Friday, March 22 from 9:30 a.m.-noon, "Creating a Plan for Success" will be offered. This workshop is designed to help artists develop long- and short-term goals and create a written plan. Emphasis will be placed on lifestyle choices that affect one’s work and the role of relationships with mentors.

On Friday, April 12 from 9:30 a.m.-noon, a follow-up session on "Working the Plan" will allow artists to identify next steps in growing their businesses for the long-term. Practical advice will be provided on developing broader audiences, getting involved with community projects and developing meaningful partnerships.

The workshop sessions will be led by painter Beth Ellis of Glastonbury, who is in residence as a studio artist at the FVAC through April 30. Ellis, whose oil paintings capture the byways, farms, beaches, fields and forests of New England, has been an artist and entrepreneur for more than a decade.

Interested participants may choose to attend any one or all of the workshops. The cost of each session is $35, payable at the workshop, and while advance registration is not required, it is requested. Call 860-678-1867, ext 101 for more info. The Farmington Valley Arts Center is located at 25 Arts Center Lane in Avon Park North, Avon. All three workshops will be held in Classroom 3A in the studios building.
