Antiquarian Book Fair to Benefit Torrington Historical Society
Torrington Historical Society holds its 20th annual Antiquarian Book Fair at Wamogo Regional High School, 98 Wamogo Road (off Route 202) in Litchfield on Sunday, March 24 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The Fair will offer you a great opportunity to shop for books, prints and ephemera. As in the past, exhibitors are chosen carefully to offer you the greatest selection of items.
The Fair features 42 exhibitors from the New York/ New England region. The dealers have specialties in hundreds of areas, from Medieval and Renaissance manuscript pages to modern first editions. There will be books, prints, documents, trade cards, catalogues, fine bindings, ephemera, photography, maps and atlases, and much more available for you to purchase.
People who are not familiar with antiquarian book fairs might think that only very expensive, very rare books are available. This is not the case at all. Antiquarian is simply a fancy word for old. Books and prints may be purchased for as little as $5 each, or for as much as $10,000. You might find those children's books your mom read to you, or a work by your favorite author, or a book about your favorite architect. Perhaps you are interested in art or sailing, sports or decorative arts. Books on all these topics can be found at the Connecticut Antiquarian Book Fair.
The Fair's $5 admission goes to support the Torrington Historical Society's various exhibits, lectures, outreach programs and restoration projects. The Society operates a history museum, a research library, the Hendey Machine Shop Exhibit, and the Hotchkiss-Fyler House Museum. The Society is currently planning a permanent exhibit of Torrington history that is scheduled to open soon.
So come to the Fair on March 24, have a fun day and help support history. There is no "early" buying: everyone enters the show at the same time, 10 a.m. For more info call show manager Bruce Gventer at 413-528-2327.
