Snow a Reminder of Happy Days
By Nancy F. Bergenty, Canaan
I rolled up the window shade at 6:15 a.m. in our corner of the world and what a beautiful sight. It had become a white world outside during the night: Snow—snow—snow!
I'm just a kid again, doing what I did—singing a song, for the world is clean and fresh! Degrees are down and the cold winter is still with us, but there’s not a track on the ground—not even of an animal. Let's go play Fox and Geese or take out the Flexible Flyer that slides over the ground so neat, with the two metal rails and the steering board in front as you run and lie out flat.
For a youngster born in one of the oldest houses in Canaan, at the end of Barlow Street, there were empty lots and a knoll across the street where you could go sliding, gaining speed to make the cheeks rosy before climbing up again—and such fun. It was quiet, for few cars came down the road. Now there are no empty lots left in which to go sliding on a snowy winter day. In fact, houses are so close that the neighbors put up barriers of bushes on their property lines, and there are few lawns to play on. Changes all over.
I’m wondering how the really young today may be able to enjoy a peace like what I knew way back when. Skating on Pease's Pond or Bordon’s Pond when this world had not yet grown so BIG, I felt real freedom then. Those were happy days, when my world was young!
