Thursday, March 28

COLLINSVILLE: Collinsville Congregational Church, 7 South St. holds a Service of Tenebrae at 7:30 p.m. The word "tenebrae" appears after the 12th century and refers to prayers at dawn and sunset on the first three days of Holy Week. The service begins with lit candles; the minister, readers and singers come into the sanctuary in silence. After each reading a candle is snuffed out, until only one remains lit. This candle, representing the Resurrection, stays lit to provide light for the people as they leave the sanctuary in silence. The public is invited.

EAST CANAAN: North Canaan Congregational Church on Route 44 holds its Good Friday service at 7 p.m. This will be an ecumenical service, with area churches participating in leadership. All are welcome; for more info call 860-824-7232.

TORRINGTON: First Assembly of God, 387 New Harwinton Rd. shows the highly acclaimed film "Jesus" during its Good Friday service at 7 p.m. "Jesus" was filmed on location in Israel in Biblical settings, with a cast of more than 5,000 Israelis and Arabs. It has been translated into hundreds of languages and shown internationally. It is so true to life that you feels like you are in first century Palestine with Jesus and his disciples. CORNWALL: Rotary Club of Litchfield Hills meets at the Cornwall Inn on Route 7 at 8:15 a.m. Dr. Max Stamper will speak about "How to Hold a Successful Press Conference." Max has a PhD from the London School of Economics and has written over 100 publications on international development, population, and human rights. BARKHAMSTED: First Congregational Church invites the public to its annual Easter Sunrise Service at 6 a.m. at Beach Rock, overlooking Barkhamsted Reservoir on Beach Rock Rd. (between Routes 318 & 181). The service will be led by Rev. Timothy Hare, Pastor of Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church. An Easter Breakfast will follow at the First Congregational Church on Old Town Hall Rd. (just north of Beach Rock). In case of inclement weather, the service will also be held at the church. TORRINGTON: First Assembly of God, 387 New Harwinton Rd. hosts "Bread of Life," a dramatic presentation by the First Assembly of God Choir and the Torrington Christian Academy Players at 10:45 a.m. The Biblical account of the lad with five loaves and two fishes, portrayed during the time of Christ’s life, death and resurrection, becomes the backdrop for this delightful musical production. The vibrant lad will be portrayed by Timothy Terwilliger, his crippled father by Joshua Russell, his skeptical mother by Heather Bourgoin, and his Uncle Cleopas by David Sand. Monday, April 1

GOSHEN: A caucus of registered Democratic voters of Goshen will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall Conference Room. It’s purpose is to endorse a party delegate for state and district conventions, to endorse a candidate for governor for the 2002 election, and to fill vacancies on the committee. COLEBROOK: A caucus for enrolled members of the Democratic Party of the Town of Colebrook will be held at 7 p.m. at Colebrook Senior Center. The purpose of the caucus is to endorse delegates for the state and district conventions, and to transact other business as may properly come before the caucus.

LITCHFIELD: Community Center adult activities–painting with friends (all artists welcome) from 9 a.m.-noon; Crafters Corner meets from 10 a.m.-noon; computer class from 1-3 p.m.; American Red Cross blood drive from 1:30-6:15 p.m.

BRISTOL: The Mothers of Multiples of Greater Bristol meet at 7:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 31 Maple St. This month’s guest is nutritionist Dr. Marie Mammone. TORRINGTON: Connecticut Valley Chorale sponsors an all-you-can-eat Pasta and Polenta Supper to benefit its Scholarship and Music Funds with servings from 5-7 p.m. at St. Maron’s Hall, 613 Main St. Scarpelli’s Catering is in charge of preparing the meal, which includes pasta, polenta, meatballs, tossed salad, rolls and butter, beverage and dessert. There will be door prizes, and take-out dinners will also be available. LITCHFIELD: Community Center activities–Senior exercise class at 10:30 a.m.; creative writing group from 1-3 p.m.; Todd Bryda presents "Life of the Civil War Soldier" ($5, refreshments will be served) from 1:30-3 p.m.; teen program for students in grades 7-9 ($3) from 7-10 p.m.

RIVERTON: Riverton Grange meets at the Grange Hall on Route 20 at 7:30 p.m. First and second degrees will be conferred upon a group of candidates; this is a vital part of being a member of the Grange, and it is hoped that all members will try to attend. At the close of the meeting, Shirley and Rujo Moore will provide refreshments.

TORRINGTON: Holy Trinity Church, 64 Berry St. (one block west of Migeon Ave.) holds a Penny Auction at 7 p.m.; doors open at 6 p.m. Items include household goods, children’s games, gift baskets, jewelry, and much more. WINSTED: Winsted AARP #1051 meets at 1:30 p.m. in the recreation room at Chestnut Grove. Mr. Fred Newman of the Winsted Housing Authority will speak about the future plans for the expansion of senior housing in Winsted. Nominations for officers will be presented. The Board of Directors will meet at 12:30 p.m.

 

Saturday, April 6

LITCHFIELD: Community Center activities–yoga at 9:30 a.m.; Spring Cleanup Day (volunteers needed–bring rake, shovel or push broom and lots of energy!) from 9:30 a.m.-noon.

TORRINGTON: CT Rivers Council Boy Scouts, American Red Cross and Torrington Area Health District sponsor Save a Life Day and Red Cross Emergency Exercise 2002 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at Vogel Wetmore School, 68 Church St. This will be an opportunity to obtain information and necessary skills to aid the community in the event of disasters of all kinds. Skills will be demonstrated, and information on a variety of health matters will be available. Open to the public from all towns.

 

Sunday, April 7

NORFOLK: Norfolk Lions Club sponsors a Pancake Breakfast from 8-11:30 a.m. at the Botelle Elementary School on Route 44. Chaired by Sandy Evans, the event will generate money for the continued support of the town’s ambulance corps. Tickets are $5 adults, $3 children, and may be purchased at the door, where raffle tickets will also be sold. Tickets are also available from club members, and in front of the Norfolk Pharmacy on the weekends preceding the event.
