Peacekeepers in Palestine
By Ken Cornet, Washington
I appeal to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to urgently assemble the Security Council to address the deteriorating situation in the Israeli-occupied territories of Palestine. The Sharon government’s recent offensive against the Palestinian people is an unprecedented escalation which underscores the urgency of my appeal. There is real danger that hundreds will be massacred.
I believe that unless there is an immediate, decisive and impartial international intervention, the cycle of violence will expand, thus endangering the whole region. Furthermore, it has become very clear that the current policy of the United States in the region has made its intervention as sole arbitrator of the Middle East conflict totally ineffective.
Therefore I appeal to the Security Council to immediately deploy emergency international forces to end the bloodshed, to protect the Palestinian population, and separate the Israeli and Palestinian forces.
There must be a just, viable and lasting peace based on the principles of international law, requiring a complete end to Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, and the Palestinian refugees’ right of return to their homes.
