Keeping the People on Edge
By J. Gerard Dupre, Torrington

The Constitution and the Bill of Rights are the cornerstones of the best form of government there is. I am an Independent, and have been all of my life. In response to Mr. Ed Buley's March 29 article [Which Side Are You On?], I ask: Which side are you on, Mr. Buley? Bush and Ashcroft chose to violate their sworn oath to protect the rights of the people. In your article you said you supported them, and you also wish to deny Senator Tom Daschle his right to free speech; yet you were exercising your right to free speech when you wrote.

Watching TV, I saw Ashcroft tell the Senate that in order to protect the people of this country it was necessary to violate our rights. He reminded me of the old propaganda movies about Hitler. In his voice and the look on his face he resembled one of Hitler's henchmen; he even sounded like one. In those days, it was the Jews; today it's the American people. What I do not understand is: where is the A.C.L.U.?

We don't need Bush and his propaganda program of keeping the people on edge all the time.
