Watercolors by Dora Cox at Oliver Wolcott Library

The Oliver Wolcott Library, 160 South St. in Litchfield hosts a special exhibit by renowned local watercolor artist Dora Cox through April 26. The art show and sale features seascapes, landscapes, lighthouses, outhouses and flowers.

Dora Cox is an accomplished artist, teacher and writer. She has studied with a number of prominent Canadian and American painters, including members of the Ontario College of Art and the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Michigan. She has held numerous workshops and founded an art school in Scarsdale, NY, where adult students studied watercolor painting with established American artists.

Dora has conducted artistic exchanges with many foreign countries, leading groups of women artists to Russia, Israel, Egypt, Turkey and Greece. Six years ago, she canoed along the Amazon, tracing journeys of Margaret Mee, an English watercolorist who painted flowers of the Amazon. (Dora and her companions slept in tents beneath the stars and Dora commented on the stillness … no birds or night creatures. Their guides overhead this remark and promptly left the campsite. Presently a jungle cacophony filled the air, supplied either by awakened animals or skillful imitators!)

Paintings by Dora Cox are included in private and corporate art collections in North and South America, Europe and Asia. Reproductions of her Canadian scenes have been sold throughout Canada.

The exhibit of original watercolors and prints by Dora Cox can be viewed during regular library hours: Monday from noon-5 p.m.; Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The artist herself will make appearances and will host a special artist’s reception on Friday, April 12 from 5-7 p.m. Join Dora as she celebrates both her 80th birthday and a remarkably creative career.
