Thursday, April 18

TORRINGTON: The Interfaith Council of Northwest CT welcomes all interested people to attend its meeting at 7 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 220 Prospect St. The meeting will include sharing of faith statements and follow-up discussion of last month’s program about Islam. Future programs will also be planned.

Friday, April 19

COLEBROOK: Senior Center activities–lunch at noon (call 738-9521 by noon Thursday for reservations).

GREAT BARRINGTON: Claire Teague Senior Center activities–Tai Chi at 9 a.m.

LITCHFIELD: Community Center activities–Senior exercise class at 10:30 a.m.; creative writing group from 1-3 p.m.; travel talk and slide show on "The Gardens of Kyoto, Japan" with Joyce Lake (free, light refreshments will be served) at 2 p.m.

RIVERTON: Riverton Grange meets at the Grange Hall on Route 20. The Women’s Activity Committee will host a potluck harvest supper at 6:30 p.m. After the meal, the business meeting will commence, during which the third and fourth degrees will be conferred upon Heidi Merz, Bonnie Ann and Stanley Zinnoch, and Harriet Winchenbaugh. Since the State Deputy will be present for inspection of the Grange activities, all committee chairmen are requested to present a written report on their committees.

TORRINGTON: Sullivan Senior Center activities–foot care clinic (call 379-8561 for appointment); Seniorcize at 9 a.m.; Italian class at 9:15 a.m.; line dancing at 1:30 p.m.; 9/5 tournament at 1:45 p.m.

TORRINGTON: First Congregational Church, 835 Riverside Ave. hosts a Penny Auction; doors open at 6 p.m., with the auction beginning at 7 p.m. There will be door prizes, raffles, auction, and free refreshments.

WINSTED: Report cards will be distributed to all students in grades 6-8 at Pearson Middle School.

CORNWALL: Rotary Club of Litchfield Hills meets at the Cornwall Inn on Route 7 at 8:15 a.m. Cornwall resident John Scott, a former legal advisor for UNSCOM, will discuss negotiating disarmament with Iraq. KENT: Kent Memorial Library, 32 North Main St. holds a Bake Sale from 9-10:30 a.m. Come enjoy hot coffee or tea on us, and let us entice you into buying a sweet treat; proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Library. If you would like to bake for the sale, call 860-927-3761 to volunteer.

LITCHFIELD: The Forman School, 12 Norfolk Rd. hosts an Open House from 9-11 a.m. in the Johnson Art Center; campus tours with student ambassadors will be available. The Forman School is a private, co-educational, college preparatory (grades 9-12) school where children with learning differences can achieve academic excellence. TORRINGTON: Concordia Lodge #20 Sons of Italy, 34 Center St. holds early bingo at 6 p.m. and regular bingo at 7 p.m., with progressive jackpot and refreshments. Doors open at 4 p.m.

WATERBURY: Teikyo Post University hosts its Spring Open House from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at its Country Club Rd. campus (exit 17 off I-84). Registration and early bird tours begin at 9 a.m. The event will include academic presentations about majors, co-ops/ internships and career opportunities. Prospective students will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with faculty and staff representatives, and there will be a question-and-answer panel with faculty and staff representatives. WEST SIMSBURY: Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company holds its annual Fisherman’s Breakfast from 4:30-10 a.m. at the Firefighter’s Clubhouse, 30 Town Forest Rd. If you’re not up before dawn to fish, you can still stop by for a hearty breakfast of pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage and home fries. WINSTED: Lombard Ford on Route 44 hosts a Child Safety ID Day from 10 a.m.-noon. Parents can bring their children to have a photograph taken, with instructions provided so they can complete their child’s physical description information. GREAT BARRINGTON: The Interfaith Committee of South Berkshire County sponsors a panel discussion on "Violence in Our Society" from 2-4 p.m. at Monument Mountain High School on Route 7. Panelists include Dr. William Cooper, South Berkshire School District Superintendent; Dr. Marcia Savage, Executive Director of the Elizabeth Freeman Center; and Dr. Stuart Twemlow, psychiatrist and former director of the Austin Riggs Center. A free-will offering will be taken, and refreshments will be served.

LITCHFIELD: American Legion Sixth District Auxiliary holds its annual Card Party from 2-4 p.m. at the Litchfield Post Home #27 on Route 202. There will be door prizes, table prizes and raffle prizes. Bring your own cards or games, or whatever you want to play; refreshments will be served. Tickets are $3, and will be available at the door.

NORTHFIELD: Northfield Volunteer Fire Company holds a fundraising breakfast at the firehouse, 12 Main St. from 7:30-11 a.m. Menu includes all the pancakes you can eat, sausage, coffee and juice for $4; French toast, eggs and home fries will also be available. TORRINGTON: UConn Torrington hosts an Open House for area residents who are interested in pursuing a degree at UConn. The program will begin at 7 p.m. in the lecture hall with an overview presented by faculty, counselors from both traditional and non-traditional programs, career counselors, financial aid professionals, and members of the student government. Following the presentations, the audience will move to the cafeteria/ lounge to speak one-on-one with UConn professionals about admissions, majors, financing, and all other aspects of attending the University of CT. Members will vote on this year’s grant from the Fund. The speaker will be Dr. Sally Reis, head of the UConn Department of Educational Psychology. SALISBURY: Habitat for Humanity, Northwest CT Affiliate dedicates a newly constructed home on Selleck Hill (1.3 miles from intersection with Lincoln City Rd.) at 3 p.m. The public is invited to the dedication and open house tour. Please join the Lefferts family and Habitat for the festivities; refreshments will be served. The celebration is also a "thank you" to all who helped make this home possible: land was donated by Mrs. Duncan Ellsworth and construction materials by area businesses; volunteers gave generously of their time, skills and expertise; and financial contributions were made to the group’s appeals.
