A Tribute to Eleanor Welch
By Gloria Zuchegna

On March 23 a very gracious lady died. Her name was Eleanor Welch. She was the widow of the esteemed Dr. Winthrop Welch, who delivered many babies in this area.

She was Director of Nurses at Highland Acres Convalescent Home in Winsted for over 20 years. She was a well known resident of Winchester Center for over 30 years. Along with her duties as Director of the Nursing Staff at Highland Acres, she was very generous of her time and patience with not only the residents but also the staff. She provided much aid and comfort on a personal level to many people, my family included. I personally know of a family in need that she took into her house in Winchester Center for a number of years. This family is now settled in a home of their own and thriving.

She took care of two elderly sisters, one of whom lived with her until the sister died.

Eleanor was a great lover of animals, having raised dogs, cats and even horses at her home and property in Winchester. I know the staff at Highland Acres past and present join me in mourning her passing.

My life and those of my family have been enriched in having Eleanor Welch as a true friend.

Goodbye, Eleanor. I will always miss you. Rest in peace. You've earned it.

Gloria Zuchegna is former Bookkeeper and Business Office Manager of Highland Acres.
