A Day in the Country

Barkhamsted is a town that has so much to offer the outdoor enthusiast and nature lover. Just a stone's throw from Colebrook, Winsted and New Hartford and a short, scenic ride from Torrington, Simsbury and Norfolk—it's an outing that shouldn't be missed.

The Farmington River flows peacefully through the villages of Riverton and Pleasant Valley, inviting fisherman from all over the state. The river serves as the center of many other activities, from canoeing and tubing to bike riding and hiking. Along the west side of the river is the American Legion State Forest, which includes a camping area, and on the east is Peoples State Forest, which offers picnic areas, playing fields, and a pavilion for that perfect outdoor gathering.

Along the river there are several well-marked and maintained trails. They vary in length and each has its own special surprise. On one you will see an abundance of wildflowers, including some rare and endangered species. On another you may spot a soapstone quarry, the site of a former lighthouse, the remains of a CCC camp, or a vernal pool. Overlooks and vistas of the river and villages are plentiful along your trek.

Also, on the east side of the river you will find the Stone Museum. It is open to the public at various times from spring through fall, and has Saturday night programs and lectures on nature and history that are free and open to the public. Please visit their website at <www.stonemuseum.org> for specific information.

An 8-mile "loop" along the river between Pleasant Valley and Riverton is a popular spot for runners, walkers and bike riders alike. You may even be lucky enough to view a bald eagle or majestic blue heron as you travel along.

In Pleasant Valley Center you will find the general store, where you can get everything from beverages and snacks to supplies and live bait. The nearby bridge offers a picturesque view of the river and is a popular fishing spot.

On the north end of the "loop" is Riverton Center. Accommodations are available at the Old Riverton Inn and the Village Gateway Bed & Breakfast. You'll find fantastic food at the Catnip Mouse Tearoom, the Yellow Victorian and the Old Riverton Inn. Or, if a picnic by the river is more to your liking, the Riverton General Store makes unforgettable sandwiches and is a nostalgic place that shouldn't be missed. You can top it all off with a candy treat or ice cream from the Village Sweet Shoppe while perusing through their primitive and country collectibles.

There are several other shops that welcome you while strolling through the village. Gardens of Antiquity and Charm offers unusual plants and decorative items for any yard or garden. Their gift shop, Tarts & Hoes, caters to the fun-loving gardener and cook. Crafted Country and Bountiful Baskets, both at The Farmhouse, offer country gifts and handcrafted items and custom-made gift baskets. Seasonal Inspirations is a quaint boutique of Victorian wares and gifts. Riverton is also home to Hitchcock Fine Home Furnishings and its original factory building. And, starting this spring, you will be able to browse at Antiques and Treasures in search of that special something or collectible. The Great Outdoors offers outdoor excursions and classes throughout the season; the shop has fishing and camping supplies, bicycle rentals, and trail maps and brochures on the area and all it has to offer. Whether you come for the day or spend a weekend, you will find plenty to see and do while enjoying the country. If you are looking for a quiet picnic, a leisurely stroll, a bird watching opportunity, fantastic fishing, a hike or bike ride—Barkhamsted is the place. It’s a peaceful area with an abundance of wildlife, scenery and nature.

The outdoors awaits … come and enjoy!
