Artwell's "Young at Art" Education Program
Artwell is pleased to announce the spring session of its well-received visiting artist program. Young at Art is a unique educational program in which visual and literary artists from Artwell visit art and English classes to expose students to different professions in the arts and to creative ways of thinking and making art. Participating schools this spring include Torrington High School, Torrington Middle School, The Gilbert School, Litchfield High School, Wamogo Regional High School, and Lewis S. Mills Regional High School.
All classes are united by the common theme: "Who am I, and how am I seen?" This spring, students will be making murals, creating puppets, drawing cartoons, writing poetry, assembling fabric and multi-media collages, and learning about art history and photography under the guidance of a designer, a puppeteer, cartoonists, poets, a fabric artist and a multi-media artist.
In Litchfield, Artwell's Young at Art program is intergenerational. Litchfield High School students will attend Artwell's classes at the nearby Sarah Pierce Assisted Living Community, working side-by-side with senior citizens. In between the classes taught by Artwell's visiting artists, high schoolers and senior citizens will continue their work together to develop their projects and to foster friendships.
Artwell's Spring 2002 Young at Art Education Program will culminate in a Young at Art exhibit at Artwell Gallery, 19 Water St. in Torrington from April 27 through May 4; a reception and reading will be held on Saturday, May 4 from 2-4 p.m. Poems will be displayed alongside artwork for a synergistic mix of words and images from Litchfield County's young and young-at-heart. Gallery hours are Thursdays and Fridays from 1-8 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from noon-5 p.m.; for more info call 860-482-5122.
