Amateur Boxing Show at Torrington High

The coaches and members of Northwest Amateur Boxing are pleased to announce their second fundraising amateur boxing show, "Connecticut Showcase II," on Saturday, April 27 in the Torrington High School gym starting at 7 p.m. The purpose of this event is to help raise operating funds for the new training facility which opened in February.

The youth program at Northwest Amateur Boxing is offered at low cost to participants (about $40 per year including membership in U.S.A. Boxing and some personal items); any youngster in Litchfield County may join. There is also an adult program available at $50 per month (including equipment and instruction) plus a $32 per year membership in U.S.A. Boxing.

Since opening, Northwest Amateur Boxing has seen its membership ranks grow to over 40 members with an average attendance of 20 members per session. This has put a strain on the program's already limited budget and created the need for a fundraising show.

This year's show, with age groups from 10 to 25, will feature as many Torrington area boxers as possible in bouts with youngsters from other clubs from around Connecticut and western Massachusetts. It is anticipated that there will be 10 to 12 bouts, most consisting of three rounds from one to two minutes in duration (depending on the age of the participants).

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students, and free for children age 5 and under. Advance tickets may be purchased in Torrington at Anzellotti's Sporting Goods, Tommy's Bicycle & Fitness, Sports Palace, and at the Northwest Boxing Gym, 45 Water St. (from 5-8:30 p.m. weekdays); and at True Value of Litchfield. Tickets will also be available at the door. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for seating; food and soft drinks, reasonably priced, will be available. Come early and join us for some good food!

Those who attended last fall's event will tell you of the non-stop action and the good sportsmanship displayed by all the competitors. It is hoped that all the boxing fans of Litchfield County will support this program by their attendance. We need to fill the gym!

This is a family event, and parents are encouraged to bring their youngsters to see Olympic-style boxing at its finest. Two of the participants in last year's October 27 show, Marty Wilson of Meriden and Miguel Ayala of Manchester, went on to win National Championship Titles in the National P.A.L. tournament in Kansas City a week or so after they appeared in Torrington. Who knows? You might catch a glimpse of a future Olympic boxer.
