Cornwall Child Center Benefit Auction

A vacation at an oceanfront home in Ireland, at a home in Provence, France, or at a townhouse in central London, along with horseback riding lessons, art work, opera and show tickets, restaurant meals, hand-crafted items and an extensive array of goods and services are among the more than 200 items that will go on the block at the eleventh annual Cornwall Child Center Benefit Auction on Sunday, April 28 at Mohawk Mountain Ski Resort, off Route 4 in Cornwall. The silent auction and previews begin at 1:30 p.m., with the live auction getting underway at 3 p.m. Admission is $5, which includes complimentary refreshments, hors d'oeuvres and desserts.

The auction is a true reflection of this quaint, small town, with donations from local artists and crafters, writers, farmers, locals and weekenders. You can bid on works by Cornwall artists, a half a pig that's freezer ready, a load of cow manure for your garden, use of a New York townhouse for a weekend, or a buffet dinner for twelve prepared by New England Catering and Food Co.

We encourage one and all to come and view the wealth of valuable finds that will satisfy both the practical and whimsical sides of your nature, along with a large number of services, meals, tickets and treasures. Items to be sold in the live auction include tickets to the New York City Ballet's performance of The Nutcracker and Oklahoma on Broadway; a tour of the NBC newsroom with Tom Brokaw; a Marc Simont sketch; a day of excavation work, in Cornwall, with a big rig; a tour of the Law & Order set with Sam Waterston; a special package for the renowned Lime Rock Raceway, including two weekend super tickets and a ride in the pace car; and a party for 25 at the Wandering Moose Café in West Cornwall, prepared by Chef Russ Sawicki. Silent auction items include meals at area restaurants; tickets to many music and theatre productions; therapeutic massage; gift items and baskets; items for the home; organic foods and produce; firewood; kayaking lessons; tree work; horseback riding classes; and a 3-month membership to the Litchfield Athletic Club. Items up for bid will go under the gavel of our spectacular auctioneer, Dave Cadwell.

A raffle drawing for a Shaker Rocker by Ian Ingersoll, 100 gallons of fuel oil from Scasco, and a smoked ham from Nodine's with some extra fixin's takes place at 3:30 p.m., with the auction concluding at 4 p.m. Raffle tickets ($1) are on sale at the Cornwall Bridge Package Store and at Northwest Lumber and Hardware, or at the door.

The Cornwall Child Center, located at 8 Cream Hill Road in West Cornwall, is celebrating its 27th year of operation and provides quality day care, nursery school and after-school programs for 35 children. Unique among area day-care programs, it offer both a sliding fee scale and need-based scholarships. The auction is its major annual fundraiser and helps bridge the gap between tuition and expenses.
