WINSTED: Community residents are invited to Cleanup Day at the Winsted Health Center, 115 Spencer St. from 9 a.m.-noon. If possible, volunteers should park across the street and bring rakes, brooms and wheelbarrows, and be prepared to spruce up the grounds. All are welcome to participate; those planning to attend should call the Foundation at 860-379-0888 in advance for a refreshment count. If necessary, the rain date is Sunday, May 5 from 1-4 p.m.
WINSTED: Northwestern CT Community College Center for Holistic Studies offers "Herbs, Vitamin Supplements and Drug Interactions" from 10 a.m.-noon. This class will give an overview of potentially harmful as well as synergistic interactions between commonly used herbal nutritional supplements and medications. HARTFORD: Us Too, the International Prostate Cancer Support Group presents a question and answer session at 7 p.m. in the Gilman Auditorium in the Conklin Building on the Hartford Hospital campus on Seymour St. Before the question and answer session starts, Dr. James Graydon will give a brief overview of surgical advances in prostate cancer treatment, Dr. Andrew Salner will discuss recent innovations in prostate radiation therapy, and Dr. Jeffery Baker will speak of treatment options in prostate cancer, which is resistant to hormonal therapy. WINSTED: Dental Clinic for area children ages 3-6 from 1-6 p.m. at Foothills Visiting Nurse and Home Care, 32 Union St. Teeth will be cleaned and an application of fluoride administered by a registered dental hygienist. HARWINTON: McLean Health Centers Bone and Joint Wellness Program offers Bone Density Testing from 1-3 p.m. at the Harwinton Senior Center. Testing for osteoporosis is done by ultrasound of the heel and takes just a few minutes; test results are explained on site and can be taken home. The service is available to anyone age 21 or over. WINSTED: Northwestern CT Community College Center for Holistic Studies offers "Plant WisdomBotany Simplified" with herbalist Alison Birks from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. This course will explore the fascinating science of plant study in a way you may never have experienced before. If botany is a new subject for you, this will be a great hands-on introduction to the topic. Participants will learn about the plant kingdom by studying plant structure and physiology and how these combine to give different plants their unique properties.
