Ballet Ole

Nutmeg Ballet graduates Rosie Ponte and Steven Marshall

Ballet Ole is Nutmeg Ballet’s spring performance series. This year Nutmeg is excited to announce an eclectic mix of classical and contemporary dance, including classic repertoire and brand new choreography, to be presented at MainStage on the campus of Naugatuck Valley Community College in Waterbury. There will be three unique programs of classical and contemporary dance to choose from: Friday, May 17 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, May 18 at 2 p.m.; and Saturday, May 18 at 8 p.m.

Friday evening’s performance is sponsored in part by a generous grant from the Waterbury Foundation. This special evening of dance will include the world premiere of "El Circulo Magico" (The Magic Circle), choreographed by Susan and Abelardo Trevino of the Joffrey Workshop in San Antonio, Texas; and Elena Rusnak’s NVCC dancers in "Vinetas Espanolas." The entire Friday evening performance will be dedicated to our local Hispanic community. The program will also include the premiere of a new work by Moses Pendleton, founder of MOMIX, entitled "NUT-MIX." MOMIX will present "Bird in My Dreams" (from Opus Cactus) and dancers from Nutmeg Ballet (including recent winners of the Youth America Grand Prix competition) will be featured in performance selections from the competition. The evening will conclude with the classic ballet "Paquita" staged by Nutmeg’s Alexi Tchernichov.

Saturday’s afternoon and evening performances are sponsored in part by the CT Commission on the Arts. Opening these special concerts will be Scott Thyberg’s beautiful new staging of "Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra." First choreographed in 1992 and premiered in Waterbury, Thyberg, a Julliard graduate, uses his music and dance talents to create a unique work which celebrates the instruments of the orchestra through his dance visions. The ballet’s 38 dancers will be wearing opulent new costumes designed by Jontaylor, costumer for the Alvin Ailey Company. "NUT-MIX" will be presented on both Saturday performances and special guest artist Cynthia Quinn will perform two of MOMIX’s world famous pieces, "The Wind Up" (from Baseball) and "White Widow." Nutmeg dancers will be featured in a number of other classical and contemporary pieces including excerpts from Joan Kunsch’s "Sky Saga," and more.

Tickets for Friday and Saturday evening are $15, $20 and $25; all seats are $12 for the Saturday matinee. Reduced rate ($10) tickets are available for groups, students and seniors. With the purchase of one evening ticket you may receive either one free matinee ticket or one half-price ticket to an additional evening performance.
