A Comic Look at Academia

Dr. Carroway (Aryn Kyer) challenges Dr. Burgess (David Chiapperino) about his ethics in The Love Course.

Ever wonder how professors really live? What they really think? What they really love? Or even how they love? Find out!

Enjoy a comic look at academia when the students of Northwestern CT Community College in Winsted present an evening of one-act plays by A.R. Gurney, one of New England's great playwrights. The Guest Lecturer will be performed on Thursday and Saturday, May 23 and May 25; and The Love Course and The Problem will be performed on Friday and Sunday, May 24 and May 26. All performances are at 8 p.m. in the Leanne LeClaire Room, City of Winsted/ Town of Winchester Town Hall, and are free.

"We chose these scripts for several reasons. First, we wanted to start with scripts that focused on the acting rather than on the design elements. We also wanted to do shows that could be performed in different places in Winsted. It is our hope to use the public spaces in town for performances. Also, since this is graduation weekend, I thought it would be fun to poke a little fun at teachers. Gurney’s scripts are a comic reflection of academics," said Penny Owen, director. "But they are also a valentine to them."

The Guest Lecturer tells the story of a woman and a businessman who are determined to save their local community theater by any means. They are assisted by a wily graduate student who comes to give a lecture. The Guest Lecturer features Amanda Maragnano, Sean Melycher, and John Morgan.

(Louis Barney and Mary Grening) A husband discovers there is surprise and a problem in his marriage in The Problem.

The Love Course lays bare one faculty member’s passion for literature and its impact on her students and on the male faculty member with whom she teaches. David Chiapperino, Sarah Gusky, Brian Kovacs, and Aryn Kyer are cast members of The Love Course.

The Problem features Louis Barney and Mary Grening. Taking place in the socially and sexually turbulent ‘70s, it illustrates how a professor and his socially-conscious wife solve a difficult personal problem. Although ‘G’ rated, these plays would not appeal to children.

These performances mark the beginning of the Winsted Summer Theater Festival. The Festival is sponsored by the City of Winsted/ Town of Winchester, the Gilbert School, the Shafeek Nader Trust for the Community Interest, Northwestern CT Community College, Winchester Public Schools, and Winsted/ Winchester Recreation Department.
