Torrington Symphony Orchestra's Spring Concert

The Torrington Symphony Orchestra performs its Spring Concert entitled "Movers and Shakers" on Saturday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 220 Prospect St. in Torrington. The orchestra, under the direction of conductor Charles Fidlar and joined by the Northwestern Festival Chorus and the Connecticut Yankee Chorale, will present a varied program of music by Johan Hartmann, Igor Stravinsky and Alexander Borodin.

The program will feature harpist Maura Valenti, who will join the orchestra in Borodin's "Polovetsian Dances" from his opera Prince Igor, as well as perform two solo pieces by Claude Debussy and Bernard Andres. Maura, an eighth grader at Northwestern Regional #7, has won many awards for her harp performances, including placing first in the American Harp Competition, Connecticut Chapter.

Also featured will be an organ performance by Joy Corrado Zublena, with the Torrington Symphony Orchestra's bass and timpani performing Hartmann's "Festival Entrada." Zublena is a member of the orchestra and was featured piano soloist last season in Beethoven's "Choral Fantasy." The Northwestern Festival Chorus and the Connecticut Yankee Chorale will perform with the orchestra in Borodin's "Polovetsian Dances."

Tickets are $10 for adults, free for children (under 12); for more info call 860-489-9183.
