WINSTED: Northwestern CT Community College holds an information session on its Physical Therapist Assistant program at 4 p.m. in the Admissions Office, 56 Park Place. The program is one of Northwestern’s academic majors in the Allied Health field; students study an academic core and apply for special admission to this five-college consortium program. Students will have the opportunity to meet Professor Jim Smith, PTA from the state consortium program, and NCCC Director of Admissions Beverly Chrzan. WINSTED: Northwestern CT Community College Center for Holistic Studies offers "The Breathing Coach" from 7-9 p.m. Using the breath in a learned process is a healing modality that addresses our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. This workshop will open participants’ awareness to the power of the mind, how our thoughts can manifest our greatest potential, and how we can be coached to attain this level of whole body healing. Suggested reading is "Celebration of Breath" by Sondra Ray; instructor Carolann Asselin is a certified therapeutic recreation professional and breathwork facilitator. HARWINTON: Holly Hassett and Marc Trivella present "When Someone You Care About Has a Mental Illness" from 7-8 p.m. at the Harwinton Public Library, 80 Bentley Drive. Mental illness strikes one of five Americans in any given year regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion or economic status. Depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders and schizophrenia are treatable mental illnesses with success rates similar to or greater than treatment for other illnesses. This presentation will include an overview of mental illnesses and resources for individuals and families, including a videotape on "A Parent’s Perspective on Mental Illness." Holly Hassett is a licensed professional counselor and a mental health planner with the Northwest Regional Mental Health Board; Marc Trivella is a licensed clinical social worker with the Northwest Mental Health Authority.
