Like other towns in our state, Litchfield depends on interested and informed voters to take an active role in local government. With many questions placed before the public, such as school building renovations and issues affecting the town budget, it can be difficult keeping track of all the issues and different meeting locations and dates. The League of Women Voters of Litchfield County members living in the town of Litchfield decided to increase public access to this information.
Several League members first researched signage for town meetings in other towns. A few local members then requested to take on the responsibility of maintaining a sign in front of town hall. Working with Bill Houle, Park and Recreation Director, and the Litchfield Highway Department at the suggestion of First Selectman Jerry Zinn, the League members succeeded in the joint venture resulting in a sign placed in front of Litchfield Town Hall. League members Barbara King, Adele Goodkind, Elayne Landau and Bonnie Baldwin are responsible for changing sign information on a timely basis.
The League of Women Voters is a nonprofit, nonpartisan volunteer organization of women and men founded in 1920. Its mission is to promote political responsibility through the informed and active participation of all citizens in their government. For more information, go to <www.lwvct.org>.
