Memorial Day Salute to America
Joyful Noise, Inc., a unique and inspiring nonprofit choral organization based in Torrington, will host Salute to America on Sunday, May 26 at 5:30 p.m. in Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood in Lenox. Chorus Angelicus and Gaudeamus, under the direction of Paul Halley, will perform a number of American musical works as a Memorial Day Tribute to all who have given their lives to protect our homeland. The Battell Orchestra, the New England Symphonic Band of Connecticut, and a full fife and drum corps will accompany the groups. The Honorable John G. Rowland, Governor of the State of Connecticut, is serving as Honorary Chairperson.
Salute to America celebrates our nation and our spirit of freedom. In addition to such traditional favorites as "God Bless America," the "Star Spangled Banner" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic," the evening's program will include Shaker songs, spirituals, and selections by American composers. The groups will present several works by Aaron Copland, including "A Lincoln Portrait" with a celebrity narrator.
Pre-concert festivities begin at 4 p.m. and include refreshments, sparklers, Uncle Sam on stilts, Betsy Ross, jugglers, balloon animals, and many other family activities. Free flags will be given to all who attend. All activities are free; refreshments are free to Priority and Priority Plus ticket holders.
Founded in 1991 by three-time Grammy Award-winning composer Paul Halley, Joyful Noise, Inc. administers the activities of the children's choir, Chorus Angelicus, and the adult vocal ensemble Gaudeamus.
