Memorial Day Thoughts
By Bernadette Gentry, Granby
This year our thoughts and prayers are especially drawn toward our servicemen and servicewomen in Afghanistan—those who seek out and protect us from terrorists who would try to destroy America. We remember, too, our loved ones who served, and those who died in earlier wars. Our eyes with tears paint the flag at half staff in our hearts. We recognize again all they gave us as we spend this day at parades and picnics with family and friends.
In the midst of all the rush of life, we pause to think, to reflect and to honor those who gave their lives for our freedom. They will always be a part of us. We remember, too, those innocent men and women who lost their lives at Ground Zero. We hold close to our hearts all the firefighters, police and emergency personnel who were the first to respond to our nation's call on September 11.
As we take up the banner of "Enduring Freedom," those gone before look on with solidarity and pride. We are all linked together with patriotism's glorious colors of red, white and blue. May God give us strength. May God give us peace again.
