Send a Letter to Your Selectmen
By Alan DiCara, Winsted
I suggest that Winsted taxpayers send a copy of the following or a similar letter to their selectmen, so there can be no confusion about why they might be voting against the proposed town budget in the upcoming referendum. If you would like, you may forward your letters to me: Alan DiCara, 244 South Rd., Winsted, CT 06098. I will be sure to deliver all letters I receive to the selectmen as well as to the press.
Dear Winsted Selectmen: I’m voting "No" in Winsted's budget referendum because we cannot afford to spend $30 million per year for town services. We need to do more with less!
Make no mistake why your budget was defeated. I want town spending cut by the amount I check below:
___ Cut town spending by $500,000
___ Cut town spending by $1,500,000
___ Cut town spending by $2,400,000
Your increases in town spending of $3 million over two years are outrageous, especially since you only collected $200,000 more via grand list growth. Since revaluation will shift the tax burden to homeowners, as will our lack of economic growth, we must do better with less!
Nonetheless, I do want you to add a line item of $150,000 for elderly tax relief (after making the above cut), no strings attached, for those 65 years or older whose household income, joint or single, is less than $20,000 per year, mandating property tax rebates of $500 per year per household for anyone eligible. Figures submitted by elderly applicants for the state’s program should be used.
