More Disgusting Things
By A. Ventry, Harwinton
I agree with Heidi Corey [Demolishing Fruits and Vegetables, May 24]: One can see many disgusting things that people do while grocery shopping. I still wonder about the man who thumped a cantaloupe with his finger while holding it up to his ear—what was he listening for? People thump watermelons, shake coconuts, squeeze bread, and some sample anything that is not wrapped or boxed.
Restaurants are not without folks who do dumb things. Last week, while I was on my way out of a restaurant, I saw a man at the salad bar using the tongs to poke cherry tomatoes into his mouth, along with olives and a few other items. I turned away from watching this most distressing and really disgusting sight. No one else was watching the salad bar—the hostess near there was facing the door to greet newcomers, so she didn’t see. I’m sure there are other thoughtless people who do this and perhaps more—and it makes one want to eat out less and less.
