Rain? So What!
By Florence Vining Thomen, East Canaan
How do you feel on a rainy, soggy, gloomy day? Are you depressed? Grumpy? Pacing the floor, wondering what to do to pass those long hours before a welcome bedtime and the hope of a sunny tomorrow? You curse the weather, and are pessimistic about everything around you. Why couldn't the sun have shone, so you could do all those pleasant, joyous tasks that were on your agenda for this day? Wow!
Hey, ooops, excuse me! Just look at you—what a Gloomy Gus you are today! Let me put you straight, my friend. First of all, we need the rain. Recall what a forecaster said: "We are inches behind in our annual rainfall." When you awoke this morning, did you thank God that it was really raining at last? He does know what's needed, you know. And please don't complain, ever, about unwelcome changes in the weather. That is criticizing God's judgment.
Now, what can you change, regarding your gloomy attitude on a rainy day? First of all, there are always lots of things that have been put off "for a rainy day." Maybe laundering those kitchen curtains, or mending, or catching up on some special reading. Some letters need to be answered, that drawer needs overhauling and straightening, the newspapers that have been accumulating should be tied together and made ready to recycle. Wow! There is so much to do that it can't be done in one day, it seems. So drop the gloom and get with it, Pal. And don't forget to thank God for this day that He gave you for catching up on tasks that you have been putting off for so long. Get busy and be happy!
