A Contemptible Board of Education
By Christine Rodgers, Winsted

On Wednesday, May 29 there was a special meeting called by the Winchester Board of Education to evaluate the performance of the present Superintendent of Schools. Due to a lack of space, the meeting was moved from the Central Office to Town Hall. Shortly after the call to order, it was decided to go into executive session. Approximately two dozen people waited directly outside the Blue Room to hear the results. To our astonishment, we heard a loud male voice (which we perceived to be that of Mr. Joe FitzGerald) screaming at Mrs. Palmer. What a disgrace! Never before has there been a more contemptible Board of Education. The present BOE chose not to adopt a code of ethics, which is apparent in their behavior.

Mrs. Palmer is a good, moral person who works hard for the betterment of all the children of Winsted. I am not an advocate of "political correctness" because it gives way to mere liberal ludicrousness. However, I am an advocate of civility, and the behavior we overheard was abhorrent. I wonder how the three women on the board felt as another woman was being verbally berated. If they did not object to such behavior, they ought to be ashamed of themselves; to say nothing would have been nothing short of spineless. Or was this something orchestrated by these three?

Mrs. Palmer has been treated so poorly by this present Board of Education, even to the point of holding her accountable for decisions that were made by the previous administration. At a meeting that was held in April, many people came out enraged because of the ill treatment our superintendent has been receiving. This group even suggested that she was personally responsible for the high turnout of people at the meeting.

When is this board going to wake up? They have been a black mark on the education system of Winsted, causing low morale among the teachers, which directly affects the children. The public’s perception of them is totally due to their actions. I would like to encourage Mrs. Palmer by reminding her that that which is evil will wither up and be scattered, but goodness will always prevail.
