Lucky to Have Vote on Winsted Budget
By Ray Pavlak, Winsted
My compliments to the Winchester Board of Selectmen for responding responsibly to the town’s rejection of their proposed budget for 2002-03.
I had expressed fear in a preceding article [Thank You for Voting on the Budget, June 14] that the selectmen would seek to avoid making the difficult decisions needed to reach the desired reductions in the budget that the 3 to 1 vote in the referendum demanded. Given the fact that the economy still has not recovered, the remaining 2 mill increase in the new budget proposal requires a closer look at ways to achieve economy on the town side of the budget.
Whatever your thoughts, please attend the reconvened annual town meeting at the Gilbert School on Thursday, June 27 at 7 p.m. to speak, listen and vote regarding the budget. Then, make use of the privilege we have of voting in the referendum that will be scheduled.
To paraphrase Jackie Gleason: How lucky we are!
