Military Veterans Invited to South Pacific
On the Fourth of July, to honor those who serve this country, Barrington Stage Company will offer half-price tickets to South Pacific for military veterans, current members of the armed services, and our local police and firefighters. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Barrington Stage offices at 18 Elm St. in Sheffield, or on the evening of the performance at the Consolati Performing Arts Center, also in Sheffield. To receive the discount, all veterans and current service people have to do is to present an appropriate ID.
South Pacific, Rodgers and Hammerstein's great classic musical about America at war, garnered nine Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize when it was first produced on Broadway in 1949. The world has sung the show's unforgettable songs ever since, including "Some Enchanted Evening," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair," "Younger than Springtime," "Bali Ha'i" and "There's Nothing Like a Dame." The sensational score, plus a courageous look at genuine individuals at the edge of war and caught in a clash of cultures, immediately made South Pacific a symbol of the great heights American musical theater can attain.
At the heart of the show's success is its celebration of the American character. The Navy soldiers and nurses of South Pacific, whatever their fates and failings, all share common fundamental traits of decency, honor and a desire to do the job well. In recent months, the traditional virtues that inspired Rodgers and Hammerstein's tale of World War II have re-emerged to inspire all of us again, and BSC is proud to pay tribute to the service men and women who in each generation show us how it's done.
On July 4, in additional to the 50% discount for service personnel, BSC's family-friendly policies remain in force. Children 13 years and younger will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult—one youngster per adult. Students aged 14 years through college can purchase half-price tickets. And, as with every Thursday night performance, residents from Connecticut and Columbia County can receive a 20% discount one hour prior to performance with an ID (cash purchases only).
The curtain for South Pacific rises at 8 p.m. The show runs through July 13, with group packages and individual tickets still available. Full price tickets range from $28-$40; for more info call 413-528-8888.
