TORRINGTON: Concordia Lodge #20 Sons of Italy, 34 Center St. holds early bingo at 1 p.m. and regular bingo at 2 p.m., with progressive jackpot and refreshments. Doors open at 11 a.m.

TORRINGTON: The Greater Torrington team that will be embarking on the 3-day, 60-mile Avon Breast Cancer Walk in October holds a Pasta Supper from 5-7 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 21 Fern Dr. Team members are Janice VanDeusen, Doreen Holtman and Dan Hanscom of Torrington; Aaron Raymond of Bristol; and Terry Maule of New Hartford. NEW HARTFORD: St. John's Episcopal Church holds a Chicken Barbecue from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Chapin Park in Pine Meadow. Menu includes 1/2 barbecued chicken, pasta salad, tossed salad, baked beans, roll, dessert and beverage. Tickets are $8 adults, $5 children (under 10), and will be available at the barbecue.

NEW HAVEN: Ralph Nader brings his "People Have the Power Tour" to the New Haven Coliseum to support public financing of campaigns, worker's rights, corporate reform, environmental protection, living wages and single-payer health care in Connecticut. Internationally acclaimed singer/ songwriter Patti Smith, comedian D.L. Hughley, actress/ comedienne Janeane Garofalo, host of Democracy Now Amy Goodman, spoken-word artist Jello Biafra, Hartford City Councilwoman and Green Party member Elizabeth Horton Sheff, Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Bill Curry, along with national entertainers, special guest performers, and local speakers working for progressive social change will join Nader during the event. Doors open and live music begins at 3 p.m.; the main event starts at 5 p.m. General admission tickets are $11 in advance, $15 at the door; children (12 and under) will be admitted free, with plenty of entertainment provided. Thursday, July 4

COLEBROOK: Senior Center closed.

COLEBROOK: Colebrook Associates sponsor the annual Independence Day Celebration at the Colebrook Congregational Church; the program will begin at 11 a.m. with a processional consisting of local veterans and a salute to the flag. Patriotic selections will be presented by the Congregational Church choir. The keynote speaker will be Mr. Jessie W. Lewis, the founder and CEO of Admiralty Associates International, an international public affairs firm specializing in corporate crisis communication services. Following the program, a luncheon will be offered by the Colebrook Women's Fellowship at noon on the church green. The Colebrook Historical Society will be open from noon-4 p.m.; the theme of the July exhibit is "Local Pottery." The Rock School House on Route 183 will be open from 2-4 p.m. The public is invited to take part in this patriotic and inspiring program.

LITCHFIELD: Mary Floyd Tallmadge Chapter, DAR holds a ceremony at 8:30 a.m. honoring patriot Oliver Wolcott, Sr., a signer of the Declaration of Independence, at his grave site in East Cemetery at the bottom of the hill on East St. (Route 118). Following the DAR ceremony, members of Oliver Wolcott Sr. Branch #10, SAR will hold a ceremony honoring Col. Benjamin Tallmadge, a member of General George Washington's staff. Members of the Charles Merriman Society, Children of the American Revolution will place a new flag on each grave. Several area veterans' organizations will be present with honor guards and a firing squad, along with a local fife and drum unit. All residents of the community and visitors are cordially invited to attend; for more info call Barbara Francis at 567-5251.

NEW HARTFORD: New Hartford Historical Society celebrates the 226th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America at Greystone (the home of the Society) on Route 44 (across from the Pine Meadow firehouse) at 10 a.m. The main part of the celebration will be a reading of the Declaration of Independence; adults and students will read it sentence by sentence. Coffee, tea, juice and doughnuts will be offered courtesy of Jack and Melanie David.

Saturday, July 6

BANTAM: Tyler-Seward Kubish Post #44 conducts its Veteran of the Month program at 10 a.m. at the All Wars Memorial on Route 202. This month's ceremony will honor World War II veteran Edward Stevens of Litchfield. Mr. Stevens passed away on September 11, 1999. The public is invited.
