Talcott Mountain Music Festival presents the Hartford Symphony Orchestra in an ALL- TCHAIKOVSKY SPECTACULAR conducted by new HSO Music Director Edward Cumming on Friday, June 28 at 7:30 p.m., rain or shine at Simsbury Meadows on Iron Horse Boulevard in downtown Simsbury. Project Troubadour holds its 13th annual GROVE FESTIVAL on Saturday, June 29 from 5-10 p.m. at the Salisbury Town Grove in Lakeville. Barrington Stage Company presents "SOUTH PACIFIC" through July 13 at the Consolati Performing Arts Center in Sheffield. Set in an island paradise during World War II, "South Pacific" traces the stories of two parallel romances that are threatened by both the dangers of war and the evils of prejudice. Nellie Forbush is a Navy nurse from Little Rock who falls for an exiled French planter, Emile Debecque, who has half-Polynesian children. Joe Cable is a young Marine lieutenant from mainline Philadelphia who falls for native girl named Liat. Both romances challenge the Americans world-views. They face private battles on their remote island as the war they came to fight rages around them. A motley group of sailors, marines, seabees and nurses, also waiting to get into the war, add a humorous note with the antics they devise to wile away the time. TheaterWorks, 233 Pearl St. in Hartford presents "THE CREDEAUX CANVAS" through July 28; performances are on Tuesday through Saturday at 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Winston, a young painter, shares an East Village apartment with Jamie, the disinherited son of a prominent art dealeralong with Jamie's alluring girlfriend, Amelia. The three devise a reckless get-rich-quick scheme in which Winston paints a nude portrait of Amelia and passes it off as a lost work of the great artist, Jean-Paul Credeaux. Jamie sells the piece for a fortune to one of his father's most important collectors. But when their forged painting is revealed as a fake, a complex web of secrets and lies is unraveled. Morgan Lehman Gallery in Lakeville presents ANCIENT TECHNIQUES, CONTEMPORARY IMAGES, an exhibit of abstract frescoe fragments by Franklin Evans and sumptuous encaustic paintings by John Greene from June 28 through July 29. Both frescoe (painting on plaster) and encaustic (painting with wax) were used by artists in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome; Greene and Evans use these techniques to create extraordinary subtleties and richness within a contemporary idiom. First National Bank of Litchfield, Routes 4 & 63 in Goshen hosts an exhibit of photographs by ROBERT H. GROHS through the end of July during regular banking hours. The exhibit consists of color butterfly, flower and light scenes that were produced in the last few years. Several of Groh's images are of close-up work where one is able to see the minute details of the butterfly, some are at a medium distance and some are in a landscape. All of his work was photographed in Litchfield County in their natural environment.
