Circus Smirkus Rides Into Simsbury
Yee-ha! Pull on your boots, grab your Stetson, and get ready to ride off into the sunset with the Circus Smirkus Summer Big Top Tour! The Cobb School, Montessori proudly presents this award-winning international youth circus—named "One of America's Best Circuses" by Family Fun magazine—for six full-length Wild West shows on Friday and Saturday, July 19-20 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, July 21 at noon and 4 p.m. at Weatogue Park, Route 10 in Simsbury.
That's right, the talented young Smirkos have gone Westward and back in time to create an exciting summer tour entitled "Legends of the Wild West." Cowboy clowns, outlaw aerialists, trick-ropin' jugglers, and a posse of other rip-snortin' buckaroos will put a smile on your face and a cheer in the air as they present their high-flyin' routines to Wild West music provided by a live bluegrass band.
As special guests, traditional Indian dancers from Canada's First Nation tribes will add authentic plains culture to a show that the New York Times has described as "joyful, exuberant," and filled with "happy, foot-stamping applause."
Every Circus Smirkus performance is world class family entertainment. The 37 teen-aged troupers are performer-apprentices, immersing themselves in the life of a traveling circus for an entire summer. With the dedicated coaching of a staff of circus professionals from around the world, the Smirkus troupe puts on a professional show under a 750-seat one-ring European big top that fills with the enthusiasm and joy you see only in young people living their dreams.
Circus Smirkus has won numerous awards in its 16-year history, and has been featured in its own 15-episode TV series on Disney Channel worldwide. They have been invited twice to the International Children's Festival at Wolf Trap National Performing Arts Park, as well as to circus festivals in Sweden, Russia, Brazil, and the Ukraine. It's no wonder the Boston Globe said: "With its artistic acts, zany humor, and celebratory multi-cultural atmosphere, adults enjoy Circus Smirkus as much as kids do."
This is the second year that The Cobb School has presented Circus Smirkus. This has become a very popular annual community event for the school, helping to support its programs and financial aid fund, as well as providing funding for the Channel 3 Kids Camp. Tickets for all performances are $15 general admission; children under the age of 2 are admitted free. To purchase advance tickets, visit Fitzgerald's in Simsbury, Sartorius Sports in Avon, Glastonbury and Southington, Corporate Computer Salvage in East Granby, or Price Chopper in Torrington; call 860-658-1144; or visit <www.cobbschool.com>. Tickets will also be available at the ticket booth one hour prior to each show; payment with cash or check will be accepted.
