Lincoln Futures Golf Classic in Avon

Blue Fox Run in Avon will be the venue during the week of July 17 for the $60,000 Lincoln Futures Golf Classic, a stop on the women’s Futures professional golf tour. The Futures Tour is the official developmental tour of the Ladies’ Professional Golf Association, providing the avenue for more than 300 promising women players to hone their skills and qualify for the LPGA tour. At each stop, up to 144 players compete in a 3-day tournament for prize money. In host communities, the tour supports a local charity and draws widespread regional involvement. Since 1989, Futures events have raised over $2.5 million for charitable organizations like Chip In for a Cure.

Connecticut Lieutenant Governor M. Jodi Rell, a well known advocate of breast cancer causes, is Honorary Chairperson. Dozens of area businesses and individuals are providing financial, in-kind and volunteer support.

For six years, Chip In for a Cure has been raising money to support breast cancer research at the national level. This year, all event proceeds will help women in the Greater Hartford area by underwriting breast cancer research, detection, education and prevention programs at Hartford Hospital and Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, an exciting and unprecedented regional health partnership.

West Hartford’s 18-year-old Liz Janangelo, who is the 2001 number one ranked junior golfer worldwide and five-time Connecticut State Amateur champion, has agreed to be spokesperson for an outreach effort affiliated with Chip In for a Cure. Called "Teen Health—The Future Is Now," the campaign is designed to educate teens on the healthy lifestyle choices they should be making today to reduce their risk of cancer in the future. The two hospitals are actively involved in this program.

Other events associated with Chip In for a Cure include a women’s golf school with tour players, Pro-Am event, a Meet-the-Pros party, junior clinic for young golfers, and a Wild Oats Health Tent during the tournament.

Tickets are $5 per day and $10 for a 3-day pass; prices included parking. Ticket outlets include Wild Oats Natural Marketplace in West Hartford, participating Healthtrax Wellness Centers, and Arrow Pharmacies. For more info visit <www.ctgolfer.com/lincolnfutures>.
