Talcott Mountain Music Festival in Simsbury presents the Hartford Symphony Orchestra in "GERSHWIN, BY GEORGE!" on Friday, July 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the newly named Simsbury Meadows along Iron Horse Boulevard in downtown Simsbury; gates open at 6 p.m. for picnickers, with pre-concert kids' activities from 6:15-7:15 p.m. Featured guest performers are pianist Scott Dickson and jazz singer and guitar virtuoso John Pizzarelli. The first half of the program offers an orchestral tribute to the music of George Gershwin, including the overture to "Girl Crazy!" selections from "Porgy and Bess" and "Rhapsody in Blue." Teikyo Post University, Country Club Rd. in Waterbury hosts the Mark Templeton Trio in a TRIBUTE TO RICHARD RODGERS on Thursday, July 18 at 7 p.m. The trio is composed of Mark Templeton on piano, Nat Reeves on bass and John Cutrone on drums. Templeton has toured with the likes of Freddie Hubbard and Dizzy Gillespie. Barrington Stage Company presents "CASTROS BEARD" through July 13 on Stage II at the Consolati Performing Arts Center in Sheffield. The play takes place on a single day, as four agents meet in a cloistered room in CIA headquarters in Langley, VA. The year is 1960 and the charismatic Cuban rebel has recently taken over his country and is on his way to New York to speak at the UN. The agents have two hours to come up with strategies to make sure this is the last visit Fidel Castro will ever make, but not much goes according to plan in this theatrical version of the Marx Brothers meet Ian Fleming. The three devise a reckless get-rich-quick scheme in which Winston paints a nude portrait of Amelia and passes it off as a lost work of the great artist, Jean-Paul Credeaux. The Warner Theatre calls for SUBMISSIONS OF PLAYS that have not been previously produced to its 8th annual One-Act Play Contest. Oliver Wolcott Library , 160 South St. in Litchfield presents LANDSCAPES AND STREET SCENES, the photography of Mr. J.Y. Hsu through July 26. The self-taught Brookfield resident photographs mostly landscapes and people, retaining a traditional style while working to represent a painting more than a photograph or postcard. Also, the sculpture of Dave W. Tribou will be on exhibit in the display case. Mr. Tribou creates a variety of unusual pieces formed from objects such as spoons, copper pipes and discarded garden tools, which are melted and molded into unique art forms. Canton Public Library, 40 Dyer Ave. in Canton sponsors a special program on BACKYARD ASTRONOMY with UConn Professor Cynthia Peterson on Tuesday, July 16 at 7:30 p.m. This is a unique slide presentation illustrating the many objects you can see and identify using just a simple pair of binoculars. There will be a demonstration of how to find celestial objects and how to identify them, with recommendations for suitable sky atlases and charts to use.
