Founders Congregational Church, Route 4 in Harwinton presents MATT VALENTI on Sunday, July 21 at 3 p.m. Mr. Valenti, a local musician and teacher in the Torrington School system, is a multi-talented musician. He has been an organist in several local churches, plays his violin in area restaurants, and is deeply involved in local theater productions for which he and his wife, Barbara, have written and produced their own musicals. His style of music is his own, as shown in his improvisations and variations to the themes of such music as show tunes, religious hymns and classics. The Nefesh Klezmer Band will perform the "soulful" sounds of traditional Israeli, Klezmer and Yemenite music. Nefesh is the Hebrew word for soul, and there will be plenty of joyous and soul-stirring music presented by this seven-member band. TheaterWorks, 233 Pearl St. in Hartford presents "THE CREDEAUX CANVAS" through July 28 with performances on Tuesday through Saturday at 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Winston, a young painter, shares an East Village apartment with Jamie, the disinherited son of a prominent art dealer–along with Jamie's alluring girlfriend, Amelia. The three devise a reckless get-rich-quick scheme in which Winston paints a nude portrait of Amelia and passes it off as a lost work of the great artist, Jean-Paul Credeaux. But when their forged painting is revealed as a fake, a complex web of secrets and lies is unraveled. Advisory: This play contains scenes of complete nudity. Barrington Stage Company in Sheffield presents "BLACK SHEEP" through August 3. "Black Sheep" takes a provocative and very funny look at racism, greed and the demise of the White Anglo Saxon Protestant. Author Lee Blessing makes a significant departure from his deft realism to deal with dreams, the nature of reality, and the murky world of subliminal feelings. That hidden world belongs to Nelson, Serene and Max Winship, wealthy WASPs whose calm veneer is shredded by the arrival of their half-Black cousin Carl, recently released from prison. Art Exhibits

Oliver Wolcott Library, 160 South St. in Litchfield presents LANDSCAPES AND STREET SCENES, the photography of Mr. J.Y. Hsu through July 26. The self-taught Brookfield resident photographs mostly landscapes and people, retaining a traditional style while working to represent a painting more than a photograph or postcard. Also, the sculpture of Dave W. Tribou will be on exhibit in the display case. Mr. Tribou creates a variety of unusual pieces formed from objects such as spoons, copper pipes and discarded garden tools, which are melted and molded into unique art forms. Harwinton Public Library, 80 Bentley Dr. in Harwinton displays the wildlife paintings of illustrator JIM WAGNER of Simsbury during the months of July and August. The exhibit may be seen during regular library hours; for more info call 860-485-9113.

Kent Memorial Library, Main St. in Kent hosts an exhibit of MEDIEVAL TIMES COSTUME RENDERINGS during July and August. Barbara Graham designed costumes for 30 years in regional theatres throughout the United States. Her work includes costumes for opera, dance, drama and musicals, as well as many of Shakespeare’s plays. This exhibit includes costume renderings from the productions of Shakespeare's "Henry VI, Parts 1-3" from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival 1991-92; and the California Shakespeare Festival's "King John" from 1983. Falls Village-Canaan Historical Society sponsors an HISTORIC BUILDING OPEN HOUSE featuring the District One Beebe Hill School House on Fridays through August 30 from 1-4 p.m. One of ten school buildings in the Township of Canaan, the Beebe Hill School House is located at the junction of Beebe Hill Rd. and Railroad St. (at Route 7) in Falls Village. Ventfort Hall Association, 104 Walker St. in Lenox hosts a day-long series of programs honoring the 54TH MASSACHUSETTS REGIMENT, the first Union army all-black fighting regiment in the Civil War and the inspiration for the movie "Glory," on Saturday, July 20 beginning at 10:30 a.m. Highlights include a lecture at 2 p.m., by Stephen Belyea, who recently contributed to a book on the 54th Regiment; a Civil War encampment; a performance of Civil War era music by historical musician Robert Kilham and the Amoskeag Players at 3 p.m.; a one-woman show, "The Color of War" at 4 p.m., dramatizing the letters exchanged between the commander of the 54th Regiment and his bride. People’s Action for Clean Energy (PACE) sponsors a tour of an award-winning new SOLAR HOUSE in Charlestown, RI on Saturday, July 20. This homestead features a self-sufficient solar home and greenhouse, a working organic garden, a retrofitted Isuzu pickup truck that charges from the barn solar electric system, and much more; technical specs for environmentally responsible construction are detailed. She will also portray Mary Ann’s views and thoughts on contemporary life during the war, and will hold an open discussion afterwards with the audience. Judith Chatfield and Jeffrey Engel host CHINESE GARDENS AND WESTERN MUSIC on Wednesday, July 24 at 7:30 p.m.; and again on Saturday, July 27 at 4 p.m. at Orion House, 123A Sharon-Goshen Tpke. in West Cornwall. Numerous writers and musicians since the 18th century have been fascinated by China. Schiller, Gozzi, Debussy, Stravinsky and others were inspired by Chinese history and folklore even though they never traveled so far east. This 90-minute lecture with slides and music will connect Chinese gardens to western operatic and orchestral works. Ms. Chatfield has visited China twice and will explore gardens in Beijing, Suzhou and Shanghai, while Mr. Engel will present unlikely composers drawn to Chinese culture.
