Oh Winsted, Dear Winsted!
By Florence Vining Thomen, East Canaan
Since I grew up in the Millbrook section of Colebrook, my family did all their "trading" and buying in "good old Winsted." Our trading involved swapping apples or eggs, etc. for groceries at King and Gay's delightfully cordial grocery store. Winsted represented to me an exciting and fascinating place to go, usually once a month. We got sugar and flour in large quantities and just about everything else we needed on that one pleasurable trip—by horse and buggy, of course.
Consequently, Winsted still represents the ideal town to me. It will always be my favorite. Lately, I have occasion to pass through Winsted rather often, and though the stores and such are quite familiar, I do have an unhappy attitude as I ride along the lovely, wide Main Street.
I've heard rumors that there may be plans to have trees down the center of the street. How lovely that will be! It will greatly enhance an already attractive town. But now the ride through town is punctuated with horrible jolts over many of the seams in Main Street, so it is painful to travel through town now. When, oh when will the situation be remedied, or replaced by that lovely "avenue of greenery" the length of the street?
Don't you feel as I do? Well, do something soon, please. I'm being jarred out of my usually happy mood, and I'm sure there are many other travelers who agree with me.
