U.S. Foreign Policy on Iraq and Prospects for War

The Community Forum Project continues its series of free community education forums with speaker Chris Doucot on Sunday, August 4 from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Richmond Citizens Center, on the Green at 40 Main St. in New Milford. Chris Doucot is a peace activist from Hartford's St. Martin De Porres Catholic Worker House, which provides shelter to the homeless and support for the poor in that city. In the past few years, Mr. Doucot has traveled to Iraq many times to report back on the dire effects on civilians of the UN's decade-long sanctions against Iraq. Working with the group Voices in the Wilderness, Mr. Doucot has spoken across Connecticut to community groups about the desperate consequences of the sanctions in Iraq, especially for children.

Mr. Doucot's talk will review the history of the sanctions, provide an update on their impact on Iraqi civil society, and discuss the prospects for war as the U.S. lobbies its allies to join in initiating an attack aimed at toppling the regime of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

This fourth community forum is co-sponsored by the Western CT Chapter of the Green Party of CT. The goal of the Community Forum Project is to encourage citizen participation at the grassroots level on issues of local, national and international concern. The Project intends that these forums with both educate citizens and provoke discussion as a prelude to community action on topics relevant to the people of Connecticut.
