Norfolk Chamber Music Festival at the Yale Summer School of Music, Routes 44 & 272 in Norfolk presents the woodwind quintet Windscape on Friday, August 9 at 8 p.m. The title of their performance, "FLOATING WORLD," refers to the delicate, ethereal nature of Japanese woodblock art; the musical selection highlights the influence of this style on Impressionist painters and composers, and the music is complemented by accompanying slides. Program features Kurosawa's "Two Deer Calling"; Debussy's "Voiles," "Pagodes" and "Poisson d'or"; Miyagi's "The Sea in Spring"; and Ravel's "Mother Goose Suite" and "Le Tombeau de Couperin." Music Mountain in Falls Village presents the ELITE SYNCOPATION QUINTET on Saturday, August 10 at 8 p.m. Elite Syncopation is a quintet which actually performs with seven instruments, although obviously not at the same time; their instruments are: flute, clarinet, saxophone, violin, violincello, double bass and piano. They specialize in ragtime and early jazz, featuring the works of such distinguished composers as Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, Eubie Blake and Louis Moreau Gottshalk, as well as those of the 20th century's most outstanding popular and jazz composers like Berlin, Ellington, and Gershwin. The group’s repertoire–much of it selected from rare performance materials–appeals to both chamber music audiences and devotees of traditional jazz and ragtime. Drama and Comedy

Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts presents "ONCE ON THIS ISLAND" on Thursday and Friday, August 8-9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Theater of the Performing Arts, located on the Learning Corridor campus, 359 Washington St. in Hartford. At first glance, the story told is deceptively simple: a fairy tale of star-crossed lovers, performed by a group of Caribbean peasants as they wait out the night of a terrible storm. The music weaves together the classic themes of love, loss and redemption with the fabric of Caribbean culture, art, religion and social structure. Barrington Stage Company at the Consolati Performing Arts Center, Berkshire School Road in Sheffield presents "BLANCHE AND HER JOY BOYS" through August 11 with performances nightly at 7:30 p.m. Chris Calloway, daughter of the legendary performer Cab Calloway, stars in a one-woman show about her Aunt Blanche, Cab's older sister. Blanche Calloway recorded with Louis Armstrong, was the first woman to lead an all-male band and gave her younger brother his start in show business. Sherman Players hold AUDITIONS for its October production of David Hirson's contemporary comedy "La Bête" on Sunday, August 11 from 1-5 p.m.; and Monday, August 12 from 7-9 p.m. at the Sherman Playhouse, Routes 37 & 39 in Sherman Center. Casting requirements call for six men and four women, ages 16-60; all actors must be able to participate in fast-paced physical comedy. Written in the style of Molière, "La Bête" depicts an acting troupe at a prince's estate in 17th century France–who speak in rhymed couplets offstage as well as on. Art Exhibits

Oliver Wolcott Library, 160 South St. (Route 63) in Litchfield presents LAND, WATER AND WHIMSEY, an exhibit of paintings by Julie Capel-Blick through August 30. Having begun her art training in the Torrington school system, Julie Capel-Blick continued her studies at Connecticut College and also studied under the direction of William Schultz, a nationally known impressionist painter; she recently received a Merit Award in the juried American Impressionist Society Show. Also on display in the lobby is a sample of the Litchfield Historical Society’s exceptional collection of American art pottery from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Marie Louise Trichet Art Gallery at Wisdom House, 229 East Litchfield Rd. in Litchfield features RECENT WORKS–PRINTS AND HORSES by Clemance Gregory of Bantam through October 12. Mr. Gregory refers to his work as "contemporary mythology." His paintings have a strong accent on horses, both symbolic and serial. Some of his works also include images of fish, which allow him to integrate the concepts of evolution into his work. Mr. Gregory’s work has been exhibited in Paris at the Musée d'Art Moderne, in Bilbao, Spain, and in numerous galleries in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City and Connecticut. Get a close-up view of the Revolutionary Era through this afternoon excursion, which begins with a presentation by Joanne Hurlbut on the social and material culture of Sheffield/ Ashley Falls during the Revolution; a tour of the Dan Raymond House follows. Wisdom House Retreat and Conference Center, 229 East Litchfield Rd. in Litchfield holds an INTRODUCTION TO ROSEN BODYWORK on Saturday, August 17 at 1 p.m. Sister Carmelo Garofalo, RSM presents this method which brings deep relaxation, increased physical awareness, a heightened feeling of aliveness and a sense of personal and creative freedom. Rosen Bodywork is sought out by many people who are in physical or emotional pain; it "heals" by making clients more aware of their unconscious material and thus more able to act mindfully and in balance. Berkshire Botanical Garden, Routes 102 & 183 in Stockbridge offers two botanical illustration workshops with professional illustrator Carol Ann Morley. THE BEAUTY OF THE GRAPHITE PENCIL on Monday and Tuesday, August 19-20 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. will introduce students to the range of beautiful tones of the graphite pencil. Working from flowers or fruits, the students will learn basic shading techniques and how to draw in proportion. The emphasis will be on the accuracy of the plant portrayed and the aesthetic beauty of graphite pencil as a drawing medium. Students will complete a plant drawing showing the full range of the graphite pencil tones. COLORED PENCIL ON TONED PAPER on Thursday and Friday, August 22-23 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. will demonstrate how the beauty of white and pastel colors can be captured best against dark toned paper. Students will learn how to sketch the subject on white paper, then transfer to toned paper ready for colored pencils. The students will observe and identify the tonal range and color shades of the flower or fruit and make a color chart to work from using the toned paper as the color palette. Berkshire Botanical Garden, Routes 102 & 183 in Stockbridge presents a lecture and demonstration on MAKING JAMS AND JELLIES on Wednesday, August 21 from 1-3 p.m. Making jams and jellies from wild berries, home grown fruits, vegetables, herbs and even edible flower petals from your garden are fun and easier than you might think. Spend a few hours learning the secrets of this craft and sample a variety of jellies. Favorite recipes and helpful hints on how to make them will be shared. Berkshire Botanical Garden, Routes 102 & 183 in Stockbridge offers a WATERCOLORS IN THE LATE SUMMER GARDEN workshop on Wednesdays, August 21 and August 28 from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. View the summer garden with an eye for color, mood and texture and then capture it on paper at this two-part artist workshop. Learn the basics of watercolor painting, including color mixing, brush techniques and composition. Learn step by step techniques at each class to create a finished watercolor. Beginners are welcome! This program covers all aspects of the game and is intended for students new to the game as well as experienced golfers who need to work on the fundamentals of the swing. It is structured to make the new golfer feel comfortable on the course while building confidence and consistency in the experienced golfer. Chet, who has been a PGA teaching professional for 15 years, uses various teaching aids including video replay and analysis. Equipment will be provided at no extra charge for those who need it. Festivals and Sales

Thomaston Fire Department sponsors its annual CARNIVAL on Thursday and Friday, August 8-9 beginning at 7 p.m.; and all day Saturday, August 10 at Sanford Avenue Field in Thomaston. The Chapparells country and western band will perform on Thursday and Friday; and a fireworks display will begin at 9 p.m. on Thursday. On Saturday there will be a ride matinee from 12:30-4 p.m., and the Parade with over 40 fire companies participating begins at 6 p.m. There will be numerous rides, games, and a delicious food booth.

Habitat for Humanity Northwest CT Affiliate holds its annual TAG SALE on Saturday, August 10 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in Bitterman Hall at St. Joseph’s Church Community Center on North Elm St. in Canaan. This sale, which has become one of the area’s largest, will provide funds toward building another affordable home in the Northwest Corner of Connecticut. Featured this year are a large selection of furniture, household items, books and art work; food and refreshments will be available. There will be a Preview and Purchase showing with refreshments on Friday, August 9 from 6-8 p.m.; admission is $10 for this preview. There will also be a Cleanup Sale on Sunday, August 11 from noon-3 p.m. with most items offered at half price. Trips

Goshen Recreation and Barbara’s Friends offer a nine-day trip along the CALIFORNIA GOLD COAST; the trip departs from Goshen’s Camp Cochipianee for Bradley Airport on September 14. Berkshire Historical Society presents CIVIL WAR DAYS on Saturday, August 10 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Sunday, August 11 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Herman Melville’s Arrowhead, Holmes Rd. in Pittsfield. The two-day event will feature over 40 re-enactors from the 28th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, Company K, demonstrating life in the army. Watch as they recruit new soldiers and take them through the process of training. See drilling and firing exhibitions and enjoy period music, poetry, and patriotic speeches. A 19th century Ladies Aid Society Relief Fair will take place on Saturday with goods for sale and craft demonstrations.
