Bond Commission Funds Litchfield Bridge Project
The State Bond Commission has approved funding in the amount of $26,000 to help pay for a bridge rehabilitation project on Route 254 in Litchfield. The total cost of the project is $130,000. The federal government's share of the project cost is $104,000. No local funding is involved.
Although this bridge has not deteriorated to the point that it has become a public safety hazard, it clearly needs rehabilitation work. The bottom portion of the existing steel plate culvert is badly corroded and a large part of that section has holes rusted through it. Wooden rail posts on the west side of the bridge are tilted and the cable guide railing is slack. Also, the concrete slope paving around the pipe ends is broken and needs to be repaired.
Repairs recommended for the bridge include relining the existing steel plate pipe with a new pipe, repairing the concrete paving around the pipe ends, and replacing the existing cable rail with a metal beam rail. The project will have very little impact on the flow of traffic because no roadway work is required and the work can be done while traffic is moving.
